Week Twenty Three - February 4th 2022
Dear Parents,
Firstly, a very happy Chinese New Year to all those celebrating. Xinnian kuai le! It is wonderful, in our international school, to have families from so many countries in the world and for our students to learn so much from each other. We shall soon have a visit from the Council for International Schools, as part of our accreditation process, and their focus on global citizenship aligns very well with our own school values.
On the subject of values, we are very proud of a member of our Front of House team, Ms. Rania, who undertook an extraordinary sporting feat in order to fund the heart surgery of a nine-year-old boy, Marwan. “50 Athletes; 50 Hours; 50 000 AED – The Gift of Health”, was the title of the challenge, during which fifty sports enthusiasts swam, biked and ran for fifty consecutive hours, covering a total distance of 2,511km (the equivalent of the distance from Dubai to Khartoum, Marwan’s hometown). The challenge started at midnight on December 2nd and lasted until 2am on December 4th. Marwan has since undergone successful surgery and is now on the road to recovery. Ms. Rania attended the official engraving ceremony held at the Al Jalila Foundation in January 2022 and her team’s name now appears on the Fame Wall. We are delighted that Ms. Rania is part of our community and modelling such values to our students.
With regard to sporting achievement, this week’s highlight is in athletics. Saurav N (G9) had the privilege of competing in the UAE Federation Athletics Competition in Sharjah. Saurav won Gold for the U16 long jump, with a distance of 4m13! We offer Saurav our huge congratulations and look forward to following his future sporting achievements.
Finally, it was World Read Aloud Day on Wednesday this week. This special day motivates children, teens, and adults to celebrate the power of words. At GIS this year, Ms MacLeod decided to highlight our school leaders reading stories aloud on video. Ms Kim and I were honored to be asked and we hope families at home might enjoy these two stories! Mine is called ‘Dogger’ and is aimed at the younger students and Ms Kim’s story, ‘The other side’, is aimed at the older students. Perhaps these stories will inspire you to have a family ‘read aloud’ session time at home this weekend.
Kind regards and have a good weekend,
Simon Herbert
