Week Six - October 7th 2021
Dear Parents,
I hope that you are well.
I gave two Head of School’s Commendations this week and I am delighted to say that these were awarded for Kindness and Care, values which stem from our culture of respect. Both Anthony T (Grade 2A) and Amir H (Grade 3C) have exemplified these values, either through helping a new classmate to settle, and even translating for him, or simply showing care and concern for others throughout the day. We are very proud of these students and we hope that this indicates what we stand for at GIS.
Celebrating our values and modelling best practice is the first step in a successful behavior policy. When children fully understand what parents and teachers really value and celebrate, it has a powerful effect. This was also made clear in this week’s Primary School ConnectED on Behavior Management. Ms. Kim spoke about the processes and the successes of a well-constructed policy and it was pleasing to see so many engaged parents.
Ms. Beth, our Secondary School Librarian, organised a creative ‘book fair’ this week. Grade 6 and 7 students loved the chance to browse through the new library collection, displayed on ‘banquet’ tables, rather than hidden away on the shelves. Many books were selected and taken home and the idea was a huge success. This opportunity will be open to other Grade Levels very soon.
Exciting learning took place this week in the Aviation, Aeronautics and Space Center. GIS parent and commercial airline pilot, Mr. Karl Kapadia, gave generously of his time and enthralled students in Grade 9 and 10 with his presentation on flying, which included an analysis of the forces involved and fascinating insights into piloting an A380. I was very impressed by our students’ responses and engagement in this interactive session. Thank you to Mr. Kapadia and to Mr. Vikas for arranging this.
Finally this week, we send our huge congratulations to our Parent Relations Executive, Ms. Sally Bull, her husband Mark, and sister-in-law Ms. Victoria Lumby, our GEMS Vice-President for Enrolments. They completed a full marathon on Sunday! They ran in memory of Mark and Victoria’s cousin, who sadly lost his battle against Cancer, and they raised over 10,000 AED for Teenage Cancer Trust. This wonderful feat was timed to reflect the London Marathon which also took place on Sunday. Congratulations to Sally, Mark and Vicki. Some say that Sally has trained for this by conducting hundreds of tours around GIS for prospective parents.
Kind regards and have a good weekend,
Simon Herbert
