Week Twenty Nine - March 18th 2022
Dear Parents,
I hope that you are well.
I would like to offer my huge thanks and congratulations to our GISPA team who organized such a successful GIS Expo 2022 event on Saturday, March 12th. There were so many fun activities, from competitions and challenges, through to musical performances and dance; our families loved being able to attend an event again and we were even able to see people ‘unmasked’ for the first time! Attendance was huge and people obviously wanted to support the school and bring the whole family. In last week’s newsletter I mentioned the ‘Dunk the Principal’ opportunity, and it turned out to be a reality. Many students paid to take advantage of this ‘once in a year’ chance to soak school leaders!
On the sporting front this week, we had our first swimming gala in a long time. Thank you to Ms Hadeel, GIS swim coach and PE staff member, for organizing this. Our primary Jaguars team came in first place overall, with thirty-four personal best times and sixteen swimmers claiming gold. Ms Hadeel commented that ‘behavior was impeccable and everyone was an outstanding ambassador for the school.’
Leyan S (Grade 5) and Arav D (Grade 10) are both gymnasts, and made us proud through their success at the Expo Aspire Invitational Gymnastics Competition last weekend. With over 400 gymnasts from multiple countries and clubs taking part, it was one of the largest competitions ever held in Dubai. Leyan managed one Gold medal and two Silver for three different apparatus and gained first place overall. Arav competed on Pummel and took Gold.
On the musical front, it was such a pleasure to hear our students playing in the main reception lobby of our school on Thursday this week. It was a wonderful way to start the day. Thank you to our talented pianists, Evana D (G5), Setya H (G6) and Sanjna T (G9). As Ms Anastassia says, ‘If you missed it, come by and listen next Thursday at 7.50am’.
In a school with a wonderfully diverse range of students from over ninety nationalities, it is so important to not only accept others, but to celebrate others. We have this week considered the concept of ‘otherness’ and what this means. How do we understand that everyone is different, accept that difference and celebrate it? During ‘Diversity Week’, I have seen some amazing lessons in neurodiversity and was impressed by the approach shown by so many students in gaining a greater understanding of difference. My thanks to GIS parent, Ms. Isabelle, and to our Head of Inclusion, Ms. Diana, for bringing the week to life and encouraging all within the GIS community to support each other on their educational journey.
Kind regards and have a good weekend,
Simon Herbert
This week was another very busy week for our Jaguars!
On Tuesday we were delighted to host our first inter school swim gala in over two years. We had 34 swimmers compete with 34 PBs, 23 gold medals, 16 silver medals and 8 bronze. Our Jaguars won with a whopping 504 points. Thank you, Ms. Hadeel, for all the planning that went into making this such a successful event and we look forward to more galas in Term 3.
Tuesday was a busy day as we also had our U10 tennis squad compete in the DASSA singles competition. Four Grade students competed against a number of other students across Dubai. Congratulations to Fabio A who was narrowly beaten in the final to finish 2nd and to Ceren K who finished 3rd in the girls’ category.
Our secondary athletics squad took part in the DASSA athletics meet at Sports City on Wednesday morning. 32 Students competed in a range of track and field events. Special mention to Marina E who came 1st in her 200m, Adam K who came 1st in his 100m sprint, Reshi who finished 2nd in the 1500m and Tariebi O who finished 2nd in the high jump and 200m sprint.
On Wednesday, our U11 girls football squad kept their 100% record intact with a hard fought 5-3 victory over DBS Jumeirah Park. The U11 sharpshooters now have 10 goals in 2 games and have represented the school incredibly well in their 2 fixtures to date.
On Thursday, 30 students travelled to GEMS World Academy for the first athletics meet of the year. Our students did incredibly well with a number of gold medals, PBs & incredible performances, coming 2nd overall out of 6 schools, which is a great achievement. Our students were wonderful ambassadors for GIS in how they competed, behaved and supported each other as a team. A few stand out performances on the day:
Rayan. A - U10 80m sprint 1st place,
Tomas. C - U11 80m,
Leyan. S - 150m U11 1st place,
Zoe. V - U11 Vortex throw 1st place,
Layla. E - U10 High Jump 1st place,
Fayth. F, Janna F, Leyan. S & Zoe. V - 4x100m relay U11 1st place
