Week Twenty Seven - March 4th 2022
Dear Parents,
I hope that you are well.
GIS has been a very busy and dynamic place again this week!
The first important and exciting piece of news is that GIS has just become the first school in the UAE to partner with Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, the most prestigious university for aviation and aeronautics in the world. The ‘dual enrollment programme’ allows those CP students in Grade 11 and 12 to adopt an Embry Riddle course as their career-related study. If those students go on to study at Embry Riddle, or even another university which offers similar courses, they will pass directly into the second year! This provides yet another superb pathway here for personalizing our education, places GIS at the forefront for seeking out opportunities for our students and graduates, and of course offers parents a huge discount on university fees. We are delighted and are sure that this news will be spread very quickly through Dubai.
On the subject of universities, Ms. Malin, together with BMI, organised a large college fair on Wednesday morning, with over 30 universities from 20 countries around the world represented. This was followed in the afternoon by a joint presentation and Q and A session given by admissions tutors from The University of Cambridge and Imperial College London. Both events allowed our students to learn so much more about specific universities, along with application procedures. I would like to thank Ms. Malin and all the visiting university representatives.
Our Primary School has been a hive of literacy activity this week, guided by Ms. Louise, as the children celebrated World Book Day and Literacy Week. I had the privilege of entering Grade 5 classrooms to ask students about their favourite books and also the book chosen for their class reader. Our students talked eloquently and with real knowledge on their chosen books and many were dressed as book characters. My leadership colleagues went into other grades and were equally impressed. Well done and keep reading!!
As a school with a focus on global citizenship (and with over 90 nationalities of students and staff), it was wonderful to celebrate International Mother Tongue Day on Friday 25th February. Ms. Alice, Head of Department for Language Acquisition, organized a tremendous line-up of guests, including staff and students, who devoted time to teach their home language and discuss cultural and linguistic diversity with our students. What a success and my thanks to Ms. Alice and to all who contributed.
Global citizenship was the main theme of a speech by former Secretary General of the United Nations, His Excellency Sir Ban Ki-Moon. I was honoured to be invited by Dr Rana, Head and CEO of GEMS World Academy, to the opening of the GWA MUN conference on Thursday, and was fortunate to meet Sir Ban Ki-moon in person. His words during the Opening Ceremony were inspiring and I am delighted that some GIS students were able to participate in such a wonderful event. My thanks to Dr Rana and her team for inviting GIS.
Finally, after such an amazing week at GIS and surrounded by such incredible staff and students, I am pleased to say that our enrolment numbers are very healthy indeed and the school is larger and more popular than ever. We have visitors galore, multiple sign-ups for next year and therefore I would urge you to respond to the re-enrolment email that will be coming to your inbox soon! We really hope that you and your children will stay with us on our journey, as we appreciate our loyal and supportive parents and families.
Kind regards and have a good weekend,
Simon Herbert

Students are placed on a rotating timetable so that the lesson is on the same day each week but the time of the lessons changes. This is to ensure that students do not miss the same part of the same curriculum lesson each week.
