Week Twenty Two - January 28th 2022
Dear Parents,
I am delighted to see how our students and staff go beyond the school curriculum, to provide wonderful academic and ‘real world’ experiences. This is all the more impressive during the current pandemic situation and I would like to highlight three examples of this enrichment.
Firstly, Ms. Juliet has been creative in inspiring our Tareeqi Center students, who are pursuing an ASDAN Animal Care course. The students have developed their understanding and delivery of safety around animals and how to care for different animals. As part of this, the students are engaged in an investigation, comparing the habitats, food and lifespans of the two animals. This week they had a special visitor to help with the investigation, Vincent (Ms. Laurie’s dog). They are all very excited for next week, when Ms. Shamah’s parrot will be visiting them to help them complete their comparison. Ms. Shamah’s parrot Tootie has tried to escape before but is now fairly well behaved, so we hope he will be on good form next week!
On the subject of enrichment, one of our students, Saara O (5E) has made it to the final round of the ENBD ‘Poetry for All’ Competition as part of the Emirates Literature Festival. Saara recited Vernon Scannell’s ‘My Dog’ in the 8-13 year olds’ section. We congratulate Saara on her passion, confidence and elocution! In the following LINK, Saara is performing in front of her class – please see their reaction too at the end, in support of their classmate.
Head of Individuals and Societies, Mr. Jake, invited a guest speaker to join virtually on Thursday. Ms. Jennifer Mauerhofer works as a trade adviser for the UAE and Oman at the Business Hub of the Swiss Consulate of Dubai. Ms. Mauerhofer spoke to the Grade 8s (who are doing a unit on Borders) of her experiences growing up within Switzerland's unique border situation and discussed the role borders play in her job here in Dubai. I commend the I & S team for providing students with this opportunity, which goes above and beyond the usual curriculum.
Finally, an important request to all parents who drive to and from school, or whose children travel with a driver. As you know, we do our very best to manage the traffic situation and our priority is the health and safety of all the community. I would like to ask for the cooperation of all drivers to drive with extreme caution when near the school, either in the parking lots or on the approach roads. Please remember that when you are arriving or leaving, there could be children close to your car and it only takes one error of judgement to cause a serious accident. Thank you to all who already drive with care.
Kind regards and have a good weekend,
Simon Herbert
