Week Fourteen - November 30th 2021
Dear Parents,
I hope that you are well.
Firstly, thank you to those who have completed the recent parental survey, your views and support mean a lot to us. There is still time, if you have not managed it yet (another email has been sent by GEMS, so do check all mailboxes).
What a ten days it has been since the last newsletter! Your children have been so busy and impressive with their bubbling enthusiasm, even at this late stage of the term. I have visited several classes and have enjoyed seeing their engagement. I would like to mention a highlight from primary and secondary.
Ms. Alice invited me to listen to Grade 6 French students introducing themselves, describing their flag and an object that represents them and their culture, from a unit called ‘Me, Myself and I’. Their presentations really celebrated the diverse and multicultural community that we are so proud of at GIS. Everyone listened and applauded each other politely, which was a real confidence boost to the class.
I also visited class 4A, for two reasons. Firstly, to commend Ellie B. for her kindness and care towards support staff at GIS. Ellie took it upon herself, unprompted, to provide our ancillary staff with juice and water, while they were outside in the hot months earlier in the term. Ellie distributed drinks with a smile, and always has a positive approach, worthy of a Head of School’s commendation! The second reason was a personal invitation from the students. They had been reading an extraordinary book, ‘A Long Walk to Water’, for their unit on migration. This book details the life of a child in South Sudan and is a heartwarming account of resilience, determination and selflessness. The children in 4A had passed me a copy and asked me to read it. I came back to the class on Monday and was able to hear the students discuss the deeper themes within the book. Hearing these young people talk about such complex issues really made me realise, once again, the value of an IB education, which is so much more than memorization and repetition of facts.
Last week saw the staff versus students basketball. Ms. Victoria encouraged us to join the squad and despite my lack of knowledge of the game, I relished playing alongside a keen staff team! Mr Cameron was dynamic up front, or ‘in offense’ as our US friends would say, and Mr Keith was a particularly unstoppable force. However, it was the students who really showed their resilience and unflappability, coming back from a 10-point deficit to draw the game 36-36. A lovely result which ensured there were no hard feelings! Thank you to Ms. Victoria for organizing.
Events have been at the forefront recently, beginning with ‘Blue Day’ to express support for men’s health through the month of November. My thanks to GISPA for organizing and promoting this.
The highlight of the week, of course, was National Day. Please enjoy the photos and videos below. The day was a wonderful tribute to our host country’s fiftieth anniversary and the school celebrated in style. We had decorations galore, music, food, drama, speeches and an awareness on the part of all our students of just what an incredible journey this country has undergone in such a short space of time. I would like to thank all our Emirati parents for their contribution to the day, along with our Arabic and Islamic leaders and teachers, our music departments, our support staff, GISPA and particularly Ms. Raquel Nahas, Assistant Head Primary, for her dedication to making this a memorable occasion!

As we head towards the end of term 1, there are 2 community events that we are very much looking forward to, kindly see details below. Please note that the parent community is invited to attend Winter Fest along with their children and we very much look forward to welcoming you! Parents are also able to attend the book fair and drop off and dismissal times.
As a parent, it’s important to encourage healthy habits—including exercise—in your children. Physical activity should become as routine a part of their lives as eating and sleeping. The best way to do this is by being a role model, here the added benefit is keeping fit, having fun, building team spirit and meeting other people.
The adult sports leagues will begin in Term 2 starting on January 5th 2022, initially aimed at males and then in Term 3 the focus will switch to females.
Whilst sport is always competitive, we must stress that this opportunity is about having fun, mass participation and increasing physical activity levels amongst our parent population.
Registration for the leagues is open via www.esm.ae using the ESMactive Families tab (parents will need to register on the system first before booking sessions)
Term 2 you will have the opportunity to participate in:
Football (adult males) 7v7 – Wednesday evenings from 8:30 – 10:00pm
Basketball (adult males) 5v5 – Thursday evenings from 8:00 – 10:00pm
Frankie and his tree friends, Karen and Myk, are in desperate need of some festive decorations!
Please make or dig up some old decorations in UAE colours (Black, White, Red and Green) and hang it on your favorite tree before the 1st of December.
