Student Leadership in PYP
It has been an exciting 2 weeks for Student Leadership in PYP! This year, both student council and house captains fall under the umbrella of Student Leadership in PYP. We will be collaborating throughout the year to raise spirit and encourage student initiatives throughout GIS.
Student Council
We began with exploring the idea of leadership in our Grade 3-5 homeroom classes - what does it look like? What forms of leadership are there? What qualities make an effective leader? Students interested in becoming a student council representative wrote and delivered a speech in front of their class. Their classmates voted and the top 2 finalists from each class interviewed with Miss Au and Miss Sarah. After an exciting week of elections, the student council rep was chosen based on their ability to demonstrate qualities of a leader, alongside their enthusiasm and ideas for action and service within GIS.
Congratulations to our Student Council Representatives who will be representing their classes in Grades 3, 4 and 5. Led by Miss Janice Au, our first Student Council Meeting will be held this week - we can’t wait to begin the year!
House Captains
The process for selecting PYP house captains this year was once again completely democratic. Student nominees submitted videos that showcased their leadership qualities and understanding of school spirit. After an incredibly close and extremely exciting election, three captains were at last selected for each house from our grade-five team. With the challenge of social distancing and a completely new context for social interactions in place, it will be a great challenge and opportunity for house captains to raise school spirit this year. Led by Mr. Javier Lucero, the house captains will begin their planning very soon for upcoming events and opportunities in lifting GIS’ school spirit. Four houses, one home! (House shirts will go on sale in early November. Details to come after the mid-term break.)

Today the teachers dressed in GREEN to raise awareness for mental health and wellbeing.
Mental health awareness is key for educators as front line workers and also as the first line of defense for their students. Education professionals have recognized the impact that a student's mental health has on learning and achievement, and they realize that there's a great deal that can be done to help students to improve mental health.
