Week Nine - November 5th 2020
Dear Parents,
I hope that you are well. This has been a busy and exciting week at GIS.
Our GISPA team has been in touch with new parents and I thank them for their work in engaging with all our families. Likewise, our Executive Leadership Team has also been supporting parents. This week it was Ms Kim who gave a presentation on spelling, with clear explanations of how the PYP approaches spelling and how children develop literacy skills. Other workshops are planned and I hope that parents will make suggestions as which topics you would like to hear. We will do our best to accommodate. I shall be addressing parents on the strategic priorities for the school and look forward to speaking to you soon.
As you know, we have many creative and dynamic students, of all ages! This week, I have pleasure showcasing ‘The Link’ team and their official website launch. Here is the link to the website: https://gisthelink.wixsite.com/info
Eashani S. (Grade 11) and the team plan to involve the PYP student initiatives this year also, to bridge the gap between PYP and MYP, and are therefore keen to promote the new website on the front page of the newsletter. As you can see, from its humble magazine origins, The Link has now developed podcasts and has plans for TV. We wish them the very best of luck.
Two of our Grade 10 students, Sophia O. and Giulia F. have had their designs entered into the DIDI Chair Design competition. The girls had to go through the product design cycle, demonstrating and describing a clear rationale to support their creative ideas. Mr. Vikas is delighted with their creations, one of which focuses on sustainability and the other on Arabic heritage. Well done to both girls for such meticulous planning.
Finally, it was a pleasure to see the UAE Flag Day celebrations on Tuesday this week. Our students learnt about the origins of the flag, it's design by a nineteen year old, and the significance of the colours to the UAE. The ceremony itself took place at 11am with the flag being proudly raised by two of our Emirati students, sisters Latifa A. (PreK) and Alya A. (Grade 5)
I wish you a safe and happy weekend and hope that you might find a moment to answer the parental survey, which should have been sent to you.
Kind Regards,
Simon Herbert
