Week Ten - November 12th 2020
Dear Parents,
Thank you to the many parents who have completed the recent survey. Your constructive comments have been well received and the GIS leadership team is currently reviewing and developing action plans as appropriate. I am also grateful to those who have recognized the hard work of teachers and support staff and the overall culture at GIS. If you haven’t answered the survey yet, a reminder along with a link will be sent through on Tuesday - we would love to hear from you.
Our values of kindness and respect were on full display today. The GIS ‘Smiles for Zayed’ student team, led by Jana A, wanted to show gratitude to our Security Team and came up with an original method. They presented each member of our Security Team with a framed photo of himself, with messages of gratitude on the back from our students. This certainly raised a smile and illustrates how all teams here are appreciated and part of the GIS family!
The GIS name has featured strongly this week. Firstly, we were invited to participate in the Which Schools virtual fair, and I thank our Front of House Team for doing such a good job. Many parents approached our ‘virtual booth’, wanting to find out more about the school. I was part of an educators’ panel at the same event, alongside Heads from British and US schools, on the question of the importance of curriculum. I was proud to talk about the IB values, global university perceptions of the IB and particularly being part of a school which offers an international education to international families.
In addition to this, GIS made it into the Dubai based newspaper, the Khaleej Times, this week thanks to our energetic students and the dynamism of our sports department! I do hope that you and your children are enjoying the Dubai Fitness Challenge, well supported by the launch here at school.
Mr Walters and the secondary team have produced a superb positive behaviour policy. This aligns to our values and latest research. Along similar lines, the DHA have organised webinars and resources for anti-bullying week, under the title, ‘Be a Buddy, not a Bully’. There are sessions for parents and I include them here in case you are interested in attending.
Finally, I write to you today dressed in a very comfortable outfit, thanks to one of our parents. I am wearing a golden ‘kurta’ and enjoying Diwali, the Festival of Lights, which celebrates the victory of light over darkness. We are grateful to the hard work of our parents Renu and Roshini. who, despite the restrictions, managed to create a beautiful atmosphere in our main reception area and raise awareness of this celebration.
May I wish you all a restful weekend.
Kind Regards,
Simon Herbert
