Week Seven - October 14th 2021
Dear Parents,
I hope that you are well.
My week began with an interview by Ms. Farah’s KG2 class. If you have ever been interviewed by younger students, you will know why I was a little nervous but also looking forward to it! They prepared their questions really well and asked them confidently, including ‘Who helps you?’ and ‘Why did you choose GIS?’ I was a bit thrown when one of the girls went off script and asked, ‘Why are you wearing a belt?’ I think my answers satisfied them and it was a delight to spend time with this group of five year olds!
Another highlight this week was of course Pink Day, which focused on Women’s Health. The GISPA input was incredible and I shall let you read the details in their section below. I would just like to express my thanks to GISPA for their organization of a fun and meaningful event, which raised a substantial amount of money for the chosen cancer charity.
On a similar subject, one of our parents and Local Advisory Board member, Ms. Sandra Martinho, has written a book on her recovery from cancer and just had this published! We are so proud of Sandra, and we congratulate her on behalf of the whole GIS community.
Finally, and importantly, I hope that you might find the time to listen to this message from me LINK. This gives key information on dismissal times after the break next week, i.e. from Sunday 24th October. We have made some significant changes in order to ease the departure of all students at the end of the day. I have discussed this with many in our community, including the parents on our LAB and also GISPA and they are keen to support and trial this. I shall also be sending you a separate letter on this subject.
Kind regards and have a good weekend,
Simon Herbert
This week saw the return of the GIS Jaguars in an interschool fixture for the first time in almost 2 years. Four fixtures were played successfully and safely against two schools over the week at U19 level in both basketball and football.
It was a particularly momentous day on Tuesday, as for the first time ever in GIS history we were able to field a U19 girls football team. The girls performed incredibly well and were unlucky to come away with a narrow defeat on the day.
On Wednesday our U19 basketball boys hosted Kings’ School Al Barsha and had a hard fought victory after a great overall team performance.
Our boys footballers and girls basketball squad suffered defeats at the hands of WEK and Kings’ respectively with a lot of learning and positives to be taken from both.
