Week Twelve - November 26th 2020
Dear Parents,
GIS continues to buzz with activity this week and I would like to thank Ms. Cristina and the PE department for creating a sports week for the Primary School students. This was fun, energetic, competitive and at the same time collaborative! We saw sprints, water races, skipping, dancing and even a superhero or two. It was a feat of organisation to put on sports events with social distancing for batches of students to enjoy, but from the feedback, it could not have gone better. Please see the Primary School section of this newsletter for more details.
With only seven more working days of school before the end of term, and as we look forward to holidays, I should remind all families travelling out of the UAE to read our Doctor’s summary of the DHA guidelines below. Travel forms must be completed, and on return to Dubai, a negative PCR test must be obtained with a validity of 48 hours before re-entering the school campus.
On the subject of forthcoming celebrations, we thank our GIS parents Ms. Alyazia, Ms. Amna and Ms. Reema, who alongside Ms. Noor, Ms. Amineh, Mr. Magid and their teams have been preparing for the UAE National Day. Children have been learning more about the history of the UAE, our context, and the meaning behind the day. Decorations have been been put up and although celebrations have had to be modified this year, we are still going to thoroughly enjoy the day! We shall have a video available by Sunday, which we will share with you all.
With UAE and GIS values at the forefront, the Student Service Committee, led by Kiana H and Jana A, has been planning a donation drive to the Dubai Foundation for Women and Children. This aligns closely to the World Children’s Day (November 20th), and International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (November 25th). As you will see in the description below from Kiana, at GIS we are seeking to go beyond simply donating – it is important that students have a clear understanding of the charitable purpose, through service and action. Well done to the Student Service Committee for this – please read Kiana’s words below.
“This foundation aims to provide immediate protection for women and children that are victims of domestic violence, child abuse, and human trafficking. We, as the service committee, recognize the importance of awareness, especially on a topic such as violence against women and children. Hence, through this donation drive, we aim to not only create a sense of service and a culture of giving back in the GIS community but most importantly, raise awareness on this topic. This event will be launching on Sunday, the 29th of November, and will be ongoing until the 21st of January. Each homeroom in the secondary school will be provided with a donation box, a list of items that are required by the foundation, and a list of acts of service. The list will include a series of tasks that can be done in school, and outside of school, and through this list, we aim to promote a culture of service and giving back in GIS.”
May I wish you all a wonderful National Day when it comes, and before that, a good weekend.
Kind Regards,
Simon Herbert
Dear GIS Families,
With the approach of winter break, our thoughts will be centered around spending time with family and loved ones. In some cases, this will mean travel to other regions and countries. With this in mind, we would like to highlight the key guidelines to follow, when travelling outside of the UAE.
All parents/students are required to declare their recent travel history by completing the DHA Form online: https://www.dha.gov.ae/en/Pages/coronaregistration.aspx . Where it states ‘School Email ID field’ in the form, the email address clinic_gis@gemsedu.com should be used.
All students who have returned from travel abroad require a Negative PCR test done in Dubai with a 48 hour validity in order to resume learning at school.
Students who do not have a negative PCR test result with a 48 hour validity will be required to access distance learning for 14 days from their arrival date.
PCR test results are valid for 48 hours only from the date of result. The PCR test may be completed at Dubai airport or any approved DHA facility within the emirate (Dubai). Other emirates may have different requirements, so please check with the relevant authorities before travel.
· To be clear, term restarts on January 3rd: a PCR test result must be received within 48 hours from the start of term. Therefore, a result received on 31st December or prior to this will not allow entry into school.
As guidelines change frequently, for the most up to date information, please visit www.mohap.gov.ae . Further information on travel to, from and through the UAE is also available on Emirates Travel Updates.
