Week Six - October 6th, 2023
Dear Parents,
I hope that you are well.
I write to you from Dublin, where I am at the IB Global Conference, with the honor of representing the GEMS group and reinforcing the close links we have to the International Baccalaureate Organisation. The IB is the fastest growing curriculum in the UAE and you, our parents, recognize its gold standard value and balance between knowledge and skills, underpinned by a strong ethos. As I said to staff this week, I shall be meeting the leaders of the IBO, which reflects well on the school and our four dynamic programmes.
Our students have been as dynamic as ever this week and our Grade 1s have enjoyed their ‘Wellfest’, ably supported by our wonderful parent helpers. From yoga, to mindfulness, sport, health and wellbeing, through to dance and breathing exercises! My thanks to all involved.
This week was the turn of our Grade 9 families to enjoy a ‘Meet and Greet’. I am sorry to have missed the culinary delights! Thank you to our secondary team for making this possible and to all families who contributed.
It is a pleasure to commend Mr Harry, Assistant Head of Secondary, who has had his second novel published! ‘Children of the Sun’ is set in North Korea and was inspired by Mr Harry’s visit there a few years ago. It follows the lives of three teenagers in their small town and the struggles they face.
This Thursday was World Teacher Appreciation Day. Thank you for your comments, which demonstrate your gratitude to our teachers. I would like to reiterate how proud we are of our teachers at GIS, who go above and beyond to help our students. Ms Romien deserves special praise for agreeing at short notice to speak to the Khaleej Times about her long career in education. Please read the clip to see how inspiring she is!
Traffic update: you will have received a separate letter, detailing that the exit road will open sooner than anticipated, on 9th October. Please read the letter, which includes maps for guidance. We shall review how this affects traffic flow, in all three schools, and further adjustments will follow.
During Health Week, GISPA collaborated with Gargash Hospital to provide students and parents with valuable health insights. Parents engaged in informative sessions with pediatrician Dr. Mohamed Elmatbouly, discussing healthy diets for children, the importance of vitamin D, and strategies for dealing with picky eaters. Dr. Maryam led a session on breast cancer awareness, covering essential topics like risk factors and self-examination. It was an educational experience for everyone involved.
