Week Nine - November 3rd, 2023
Grade 6-10
Summary of learning and/or celebrations from the week
PHE activities have ramped up at the start of November as students and staff start to take part in daily activities for the Dubai Fitness Challenge! As many people will know, the whole of Dubai is encouraged to exercise for at least 30 minutes a day, every day, during the 30 day period of the Dubai Fitness Challenge. Here are GIS we kicked off this event with a students versus staff dodgeball game, with the experience of the teachers proving vital as the staff ended up 3-2 winners. Alongside this, Thursday morning saw that start of the PHE Advisory Games, where students from Grade 6 took part in football and bench ball competitions during advisory period. The effort and application demonstrated was excellent, and the advisory games will continue over the next three weeks as the other grade levels get their chance to shine. Finally during lunchtimes, the students have been able to choose five of their friends to compete in the football shooting challenge, where a team of six have one minute to score as many goals as possible, with five points awarded if they manage to score a goal in the top corner. This has proved particularly popular, with the competition level extremely high. Overall winners will be announced at the end of the challenge.
The Jaguar squads continue to perform well in the DASSA Leagues, with particular shout outs to the Girls Under 16 football, who have won every game so far, the Boys Under 16 football, who remain unbeaten. The basketball squads this year are all also competing at the very highest elite level of the DASSA competitions, which is something for those students to be proud of.
As the weather starts to cool (slightly!) PHE classes have been able to get outside more, with athletics being introduced this term, in preparation for the upcoming sports days in December and the athletics events in Term 2. We are also focusing on coaching and leadership skills within MYP, and linking the ability to lead a group of people in sports setting to the skills our students will need when leading people in work environments in the future.
Lastly for this week I would like to say a big thank you to all the non-PHE staff that work so hard to enable us to provide many different clubs and teams throughout the week, and give up their time to coach our Jaguar students or lead ECA’s. It is appreciated by both staff and students immensely.
Grades 10
In today's science lesson, we conducted an experiment about separating mixtures. This mixture was composed of 3 alcohols: Ethanol, Propanol, and Butanol. It is important to note, that different types of alcohol have different boiling points and this is what helps us distinguish one from another. This property is the basis of the experiment at hand which is simple distillation, a process that separates a mixture of alcohols through their boiling points.
The equipment used for this experiment is a condenser, flask, and a Bunsen burner. First, we poured the alcohol into the flask. Then, we lit the Bunsen burner that's right under the flask. The heat from the flame reaches the liquid in the flask, causing the alcohol to evaporate and turn into vapor. This vapor is then passed into a condenser that converts the vapor back into the liquid. This condensed liquid is called a distillate.

Umrah Trip October 2023
Summary of learning and/or celebrations from the week
The MYP/DP students went for an amazing Umrah Trip to the holy cities of Makkha and Madina in the October break. It was a wonderful and meaningful journey for all who went on their First Umrah Trip. The teachers worked hard to arrange and finalize all the details for months, with the providers.
Umrah is a minor pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, which holds significant religious importance in Islam. It's a time for spiritual reflection and devotion for Muslims.
The students were highly appreciative of the hotels, rides, bilingual guides, and city tours where they had detailed exposure to the Historical sites in Islam, in both holy cities. We wish to continue this wonderful initiative on a yearly basis, inshAllah!
