Week Nine - November 3rd, 2023
Dear Parents,
I hope that you are well.
We were delighted this week to welcome the new Student Leadership Team, known as StuELT, in a ‘handover assembly’. My thanks to last year’s team and huge congratulations to the new leaders. The students themselves have this year added an Inclusion Committee, which indicates how passionate they are to ensure everyone at GIS has the same opportunities and is treated fairly. We now have nine committees and I would encourage all secondary students to get involved. Our new Vice-President is Nada Shuhaib, and new President is Manya Singh, and we are so excited to see all they will achieve for the school.
Our staff continue to engage with parents, across a variety of themes, through ConnectEds. This week was a PYP presentation on Inquiry-Based Learning. Thank you to Ms Helen, Ms Shannon and Mr Lawrence for offering these insights.
It is essential that IB educators share best practice, learn from others and continue to follow the latest in educational research. It was therefore an absolute privilege to organize a GEMS-wide IB Conference, the first of its kind, last Saturday. 230 educators and 35 presenters participated. The idea came from GEMS Chief Education Officer, Dr Rana, and our input as a four-programme IB school was crucial. My thanks to Ms Kim and Ms Rania from GIS, Ms Sahar and Mr Siva from GWA for their work in planning this event. Mr Pascal, Senior Manager of World IB Schools, was present and our keynote speaker, Ms Rostom (first Egyptian woman to climb Mount Everest) was inspirational. I would also like to commend our three student pianists, Elina P, Avin C and Yalda A, who provided entertainment during the morning.
Finally, I would like to commend our Emirati students for their maturity in organizing UAE Flag Day. The flag was raised punctually at 10am and three students (Latifa A, Hind A and Saeed A) even gave information on the significance of the flag and the day, to the whole school on the PA system from my office. Well done to all.
Kind regards,
Dear Parents,
Due to the recent announcement we regret to inform you that our upcoming car boot sale has been cancelled. We thank you for your support and understanding.
GISPA
We would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to all the swimmers who participated in the second MYP DASSA Traditional Competition. It is truly remarkable to witness the significant improvement in both performance and times since the last competition. Your dedication and hard work are truly paying off.
Team A secured the first place, while Team B secured the second place. Such accomplishments are a testament to the immense talent and teamwork displayed by our swimmers. Well done!
Furthermore, We would like to extend a special thank you to the swimmers who selflessly swam in both Team A and Team B, stepping in to replace their fellow teammates who were unable to participate due to illness. Your willingness to go above and beyond is truly commendable. The swimmers who displayed this exceptional sportsmanship are:
Fabio, Baran, Arthur, Marcela, Francesca, Luna, and Merishka.
In addition, We would like to recognize the outstanding performances of the following swimmers who secured the first place in all their races: Fayth, Arman, Merishka, and Fotini. Your commitment to excellence and determination to succeed are truly inspiring. Congratulations on such remarkable achievements.
Last but not least, We would like to acknowledge the efforts of all the swimmers who participated in the competition. Each and every one of you has improved your personal best times, showcasing your dedication and hard work. Your commitment to self-improvement is truly commendable, and I encourage you to continue pushing your boundaries and striving for greatness.
Congratulations to the incredible G.4&5 swimmers who showcased their skill and determination in the first Aquathon competition of this academic year. The event, which consisted of a 100-meter freestyle swim followed by a 1-kilometer run, was a true test of both endurance and speed. It is truly commendable to see such young athletes taking on such a challenging competition. The team's hard work and dedication paid off as they achieved a remarkable fifth-place finish. This achievement is a testament to their commitment to training and their ability to work together as a team. Furthermore, a special mention goes to Mia Fourie G.5D, who demonstrated exceptional individual performance by finishing in the sixth place. Her perseverance and talent are truly admirable. Well done to all the swimmers for their outstanding efforts and for representing their school with pride.
