Week Eight - October 21st 2022
Dear Parents,
We are certainly ‘in the pink’ this week! This expression, meaning to be in extremely good health and spirits, is very apt, as we celebrated Pink Day and women’s health this week, with a focus on breast cancer research. Our GISPA volunteers did a superb job of raising awareness, and even organized a ‘pink caravan’ to come to the school and offer screenings. Actually, this year on Thursday 20th, all our senses were involved, as we not only looked pink, we also tasted pink popcorn and cakes, and even listened to some relaxing music played by parent Ms Shireen on the Handpan. My thanks to all involved, particularly Ms Thera and team from GISPA.
We were extremely grateful to Ms Marlies Klok, GIS parent and Senior Manager Academic and Training Affairs at Fakeeh University Hospital, for coming to GIS and presenting on the importance of women’s health and monthly self-examination. The presentation was very informative and well received.
Finally, we have noted all your comments, both positive and constructively creative, on the traffic situation. We are listening and I am personally organizing further meetings and passing all relevant comments to those in authority at RTA, Emaar and GEMS. As Principal of GIS, my focus remains the quality of teaching and learning, the wellbeing of students and staff, and the enhancement of our culture of Respect, Trust and Ambition. Nevertheless, with regard to traffic, I shall continue to represent our families, contact higher authorities and pursue the best outcomes. There are longer term aims and we shall also assess the flow next week. We shall be contacting you next week also.
Have a good weekend and I look forward to Monday’s Diwali celebration.
Kind regards,
Simon Herbert
Thank you so much to each and every one of you who celebrated with us. From the Pink outfits to the popcorn and pin purchases, Pink Day felt heartwarming. There’s an enormous support in the GIS community for Women’s Health Awareness Month, including the generous support from our very own students, Jeeya and Ludovica, who had a bake sale to raise funds to donate to YallaGives.
We wanted to give a special thank you to Shireen, a parent at GIS, who volunteered her time to come and play the handpan during drop off. The soothing tunes were perfect for the event.
Another special thank you to Friends of Cancer Patients for bringing the notorious Pink Caravan to the campus and performing examinations for the lovely ladies of GIS. The turn out for the Pink Caravan was mind blowing. We had over 80 women who visited!
As the month of October comes to an end, the awareness of Women’s Health doesn’t stop. We hope that through the educational tools provided this month will continue to attract advocacy and action within our community.
Please bring along some money on Monday 24th October if you missed out on the pink popcorn this week as it will be availalbe for purchase during drop off at the gates.
As our school continues to grow with more diversity, GISPA is in search of more Ambassador volunteers! Our ultimate goal is to have at least one representative for each country.
The ambassador program was launched last year with the intention of helping connect families with their mother-tongue and country. Small community sub- groups have been created to help integrate new families from these specific countries as they enroll at GIS. Although as a whole we are one big family, it’s always nice to connect with those from our country. Thus, the Country Ambassador program was created.
The requirements to be a Country Ambassador are simple. You must:
Represent your country
Speak native language
Have a drive to help others
Keep an on-going communication with families
Answer any question regarding GIS or UAE (as for many families, this is their first time in the UAE/GIS)
If you’re interested in representing your country or looking for more information if there is a representative for your country, please contact us at gispa@gemsisak.com.

This week we had a very quiet week with regards to fixtures, as other schools were on half term, but this gave us an opportunity to have some in house friendlies and work on some things for our upcoming competitive fixtures.
We have a busy week of competitive fixtures next week. Please see the fixture list and selected squads HERE.
