Week Five - September 28th, 2023
Dear Parents & Guardians
It was a short week this week, but we managed to fit a lot into four days!
We hosted a number of universities on site this week from Canada, Australia and the UK. The presence of universities on campus is vital in assisting our older students in planning for their future. The university fairs are always well attended, and students enjoy hearing first-hand information about their career aspirations! Thank you to Ms Meena and Ms Rejina for organizing.
By now you would also be aware of the Week Without Walls trips and activities that are available in February 2024. Thank you to Mr Jason for the organization gone into arranging the trips to date. To assist families, as per further communication from Mr Jason, the date to sign up has been pushed back. Please do take time in coming days to discuss with your child their preference for the week. This year, students in Grades 10 and 11 can also participate in an internship during WWW. Correspondence was sent home earlier this week to gauge the community support for this initiative. Please do get in touch with Ms Meena should you have any questions regarding hosting one of our older students in your workplace.
It was wonderful to see so many parents attending the ConnectEd this week. Thank you to Ms Sandy for explaining to parents the ‘Progression through the MYP’. Should you have been unable to attend, please do see the presentation below.
Thank you to our Islamic team who helped us to celebrate the Prophet Mohammed’s birthday today. It was wonderful to see students wearing green, a favourite colour of the Prophet, and our staff welcomed the delicious treats of coffee and dates.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a wonderful long weekend ahead. Enjoy the extra day with family and friends.
Kind regards
Amanda Murphy

Grade 8 Families
On the 22nd of September, grade 8 students, their homeroom teachers, and parents came together for a heartwarming celebration of cultural diversity and togetherness. The event was a delightful gathering where individuals from diverse backgrounds shared a rich variety of culinary treats, ideas, laughter, and cherished moments. The air was filled with the enticing scents of international cuisines, as families proudly displayed their culinary heritage with an array of delectable dishes. The tables were adorned with a diverse palette of flavors, featuring everything from Turkish pizza to Russian pancakes. As conversations flowed, it became clear that this gathering was more than a sensory feast; it was a chance for the school community to embrace and appreciate the rich tapestry of cultures in their midst. Laughter resonated throughout the room as attendees shared stories and traditions, fostering a sense of unity that transcended borders. Within this mosaic of shared experiences and multicultural harmony, the potluck event stood as a beautiful testament to the unifying power of food and community.
Grade 6A
G6A students learned about accuracy, precision, and errors while improving their lab skills and their knowledge of various apparatus and their uses. They have also investigated the impact of chewing gum for a fixed duration of time on its mass. During their investigation, they have practiced identifying their variables and learned how to describe the relationship between these variables in the research question.

Summary of learning and/or celebrations from the week
Rabi al-Awwal is indeed a significant month for Muslims as it is believed to be the month in which the Prophet Muhammad, the last prophet of Islam, was born. His birthday, known as "Mawlid al-Nabi" or simply "Mawlid," is commemorated by Muslims around the world as a moment of reflection, gratitude, and celebration of the Prophet's life and teachings. The specific date of his birth varies in different Islamic traditions and schools of thought.
During the month of Rabi al-Awwal, many Muslims engage in various activities and events to honor the Prophet Muhammad. These activities may include:
Recitation of the Quran: Muslims often read or recite passages from the Quran, particularly those that relate to the life and teachings of the Prophet.
Dhikr (Remembrance): Muslims engage in dhikr, which involves the remembrance of Allah and the Prophet through the recitation of specific phrases and prayers.
Charitable Acts: Many Muslims take this opportunity to engage in acts of charity and kindness, following the example of the Prophet Muhammad, who was known for his compassion and generosity.
Lectures and Talks: Islamic scholars and community leaders may give lectures and sermons on the life and teachings of the Prophet Muhammad.
Decorations: Some communities decorate their homes, mosques, and streets with lights, banners, and other decorations to mark the occasion.
Processions and Parades: In some regions, processions and parades are organized to celebrate the Prophet's birthday. These events often feature recitations, songs, and performances.
Feasts and Meals: Families and communities come together to share meals and special dishes to celebrate the occasion.
Overall, the month of Rabi al-Awwal serves as a time for Muslims to reflect on the life and teachings of the Prophet Muhammad and to strengthen their connection to their faith and community.
Grade 12 (DP2)
One of our Grade 12 students, Sipa Subzali had the fortune of enriching her summer break by engaging in charitable endeavors in Kenya. Here is what she has to say:
“ As part of Global Encounters, I joined a diverse group of nine individuals from around the world, including Afghanistan, Pakistan, UAE, Canada, UK, USA, and Tanzania. Our mission was to create a sustainable project for our school with a lasting impact.
In an atmosphere of excitement and cultural exchange, we taught each other short dances from our respective backgrounds. This cultural sharing was both enriching and emotionally charged.
Our journey culminated in an exhibition where we showcased our cultural learnings to the community. The room buzzed with energy, unity, and understanding. To ensure the project's sustainability, we developed reusable flashcards that encapsulated our learnings, integrating them into the school curriculum. The pride we felt knowing that future generations would benefit from our work was overwhelming. Our project was a testament to the power of diversity and collaboration, and it filled us with excitement and emotion. It was a remarkable journey we will always cherish.”
Grade 12 (DP2)
One of our Grade 12 students of Computer Science, Gleni Soni created an application over the summer break that could very much change the face of Indian marriages. A one stop shop for all Indian wedding functions from Haldi, Mehendi, Sangeet, the wedding itself and the Reception, Gleni has created an app that will cater to everyone and every budget. Something that was created for her sister has the potential to go big. Watch this space- Gleni is set to go places and will enjoy her financial ‘happily ever after’ in the not so distant future!
