Week Four - September 22nd, 2023
Dear Parents,
I hope that you are well.
I have been impressed by the attitude of so many students this week, who have such a cheerful and positive demeanor around the school and in their approach to their work. Teachers are working hard on lesson preparation and are fully aware of our Learning Principles, which will soon be on display in several areas. It is clear that these five Learning Principles (Purposeful, Ambitious, Engaged, Innovative and Connected) have been taken to heart and are being exemplified in so many classrooms at all ages.
My thanks to Ms Meena, our University Guidance Counselor, for organizing more universities to visit our campus this week. From the American University of Beirut, to Swiss Hospitality Institutions and Medical Schools from Holland and Germany, we had a variety of countries and establishments represented. Admissions Tutors enjoyed talking to our mature students and we hope that these conversations help our students to narrow down their choices, or to open up new ideas.
I enjoyed meeting many prospective parents this week, and I delivered a webinar on the topic ‘Why Expats Arriving in Dubai Should Consider an IB Education For Their Children’. The IB really is proving extremely popular for international families, and the levels of interest are huge, including from those currently learning in schools offering only national curricula.
I am also grateful to Helen Gornall, our Parent Relations Executive, and Sarah McLean, Assistant Head of Primary, for representing GIS at the Booktopia event, focusing on primary-aged children and again letting people know the holistic education offered by GIS, aligned to the IB philosophy.
Transitioning to a new country, with all that this entails, can be a daunting prospect and so I am grateful to Ms Rose and Ms Kim G got their excellent presentation to new PYP parents in a ConnecEd session. It was a wonderful deep-dive into intercultural perspectives, challenges and ways to make a move to Dubai and a new school as smooth as possible.
This week was the turn of the Grade 8 families for their ‘Meet and Greet’. I love the Friday culinary treats, as well as meeting parents of course!
What a treat this week to be given a the first ever GIS newsletter, written by first Principal, Mr Ian Deakin, back in 2013. This is now in my office and will form part of our 10th Anniversary Celebrations on 13th October. My thanks to Ms Caterina F and her children, Diogo, Madalena and Tomas for their kind thought, and of course longevity at GIS!
Finally, my traffic update for the week. The survey has been answered by the vast majority of parents and is currently with KHDA. I shall confirm when we have the approved timings changes. This survey was sent to you last week, not prior to the beginning of term, because RTA had suggested the exit road would be ready; we also needed to view how many students would take the bus. The staggered timings and other concomitant changes are dependent on the exit road opening, and we shall endeavor to make all the changes at the same time. Thank you to all parents who have approached me with suggestions, comments, and even complaints – I have been able to give factual updates in person, which is preferable to unreliable information on Whatsapp. On that note, if you know of parents who have not read this newsletter, please direct them to it each week. I have also held meetings with my two Principal colleagues from WEK and NMS and we have agreed some really positive key methods to alleviate the drop-off and pick-up situation further, and I will outline these details to you when I have heard back from KHDA. As Principal, I will continue to do what I can for the parents, students and staff of GIS and am fully aware that this situation must and will improve. In the meantime, please drive safely near the school and be respectful to our security guards and other parents.
Kind regards,
All MYP parents are invited to the ConnectEd on Wednesday 27th September at 8.30am in the GIS Conference Room to find out all about our exciting curriculum!

Hello and welcome to another school year. As our school continues to grow, we are hoping the Country Ambassador Program will also!
The Country Ambassador program was launched in 2021 with the intention of helping connect families with their motherland tongue and country. Small community sub groups have been created to help integrate new families from these specific countries as they enroll at GIS. We encourage you to join your country group via the QR code.
Although as a whole, we are one big family, it’s always nice to connect with those from our country. Ultimately, the goal is to have at least ONE representative for each country.
If you see that your country or ambassador is not listed and you are interested in representing your country, please reach out to us via email at gispa@gemsisak.com
Please see below the current Slices menu. This will be updated in the newseltter every 4 weeks.

Kind reminder to ensure students accounts have enough credit loaded so they do not face issues purchasing food.
