Week Thirty Four - June 2nd, 2023
Kim Conlin
Head of Primary
Dear PYP Parents,
Thank-you for taking part in our arts week. The performances were a highlight, however there were also a series of mini concerts, workshops and guest speakers as part of the learning this week. A huge thank-you to all our staff and students, but particularly to our arts team for putting in the long hours behind the scenes to prepare for this week. Ms Panayota (visual art), Ms Sue/Ms Emma (visual art), Ms Caroline (music/choir), Ms Anastassia (music), Ms Andrea (music/visual art), Ms Melissa (drama), Mr Javier (head of the arts), Ms Erin (choir).
As we head into the hotter weather, please ensure students some to school with a hat and plenty of water, in a reusable water bottle. When the temperature reaches above 40 degrees, students will not play outdoors. We have switched to summer uniform, which means students will not be required to wear and tie or have their shirt buttoned to the top. In line with uniform, you will be able to preview the new uniform for GIS on display in reception starting next week. These uniforms can be purchased starting in August 2023. Next academic year, students will have the option to wear the current uniform or the new uniform.
Now that we have reached the month of June, we begin planning for next year. Students that will be returning to GIS next year should all have received forms to be signed that identify familiar learning partners to be placed with next year. As a growing school, we guarantee that each PYP student will be placed with at least one familiar classmate from their list. Class lists for next year will start to be created next week. Please understand that teachers will not be assigned to specific class groups until August.
I would also like to draw attention to the last day of school (June 26th). This is a Monday, and is the earliest we are permitted to end the school year as per government regulations. As the final school day, student are dismissed at 12pm. Class parties for students will take place on Friday June 23rd.
Have a wonderful weekend

Wow, what a busy week it has been filled with amazing artwork, creative workshops and outstanding performances from all of our students in PYP. Arts Week is an annual celebration at GIS where we focus on appreciating the arts that are happening in the school from many different areas. It is a demonstration of how important the arts can be in student development, from their creative thinking skills to being risk-takers and in being open-minded to new ways of expressing themselves. The arts are an integral part of our curriculum and we welcome the opportunity to celebrate them as a community.
We've had some amazing events happening this week including: Grade level concerts, Dance workshops , Visiting authors, Performance workshops, Plays, Buskers, Music performers , Art workshops, Choir performances, and Art exhibitions
The Arts play a significant role in developing Approaches to Learning (ATLs) within the International Baccalaureate (IB) program. ATLs are a set of skills that students acquire and apply across subject areas to become effective learners. The IB outlines the ATLs as: Thinking Skills, Social Skills, Self-Management Skills, Research Skills and Communication Skills.
