Week Thirty Four - June 2nd, 2023
Dear Parents,
It has been a pleasure to see so many parents here at school during our Arts Week. Arts form an integral part of our IB education all year round, and we also like to give a special focus during this dedicated week. The performances and exhibitions have been so impressive, and the school reception area has been transformed too. My thanks to the Art, Music and Drama departments for their hard work in preparing and engaging our talented students and to all support staff who helped with behind-the-scenes and technical aspects. Our students have excelled during this memorable week. For further details, please see the primary and secondary sections of this newsletter.
We also enjoyed the pleasure of a visit by children’s author (and GEMS colleague from GWA), Lindsay Rosenzweig. Kindergarten and Grade One classes listened to ‘Sandstorm’, an adventure story with some delightful humor! Anyone still wishing to purchase a copy can contact Ms Louise in the Primary School library.
Another pleasant surprise was the news that we have received our fourth Awards Shortlisting by SchoolsCompared.com Top Schools awards 2023-2024! This was for Best School for Technical Stream/Vocational Education in the United Arab Emirates. Our links to higher educational establishments, in particular the unique partnership with Embry Riddle University, the oldest aeronautical university in the world, have certainly helped in this recognition. To have four shortlistings in the same year, our largest haul ever, reflects so well on the GIS community and our sense of purpose.
Recently, I mentioned that we have negotiated a special deal on buses for our students for next academic year. Our aim is to help our environment, as well as to assist our parents with costs! From September, fares will come down by 15% on two-way journeys. We are the only school involved in such an offer. There will no longer be the option of one-way journeys, but we hope the reduction in the overall fare will entice many new passengers. I shall send a letter on Monday also, for those who may not see the newsletter this week.
Finally, the absolute highlight of last week was the Graduation of our wonderful Grade 12 students and the chance to share the celebrations with our GIS families. As I said on the day itself, we thank all those who have inspired these young people on their educational journey, and we wish them the very best for the next stage. These students are part of the GIS and GEMS family and we look forward to welcoming them back to share their experiences with us. In the meantime, we offer our best wishes for results day, for which they have worked so hard.
Kind regards and have a good weekend.
Hello GIS community,
We want to invite you to our year-end coffee meeting!
In this meeting we will look back onto the year, want to hear your feedback & ideas and have a small look into the new year!!
Hope to see you there and have a last coffee together!
On Monday our U12 boys travelled to Repton International School for their x game of the season. On this occasion Repton proved too strong for our boys, but in what is their first year together as a team they continue to improve game on game.
On Tuesday our U12 girls looked to keep their winning streak alive when they travelled to Safa British School for their 5th game of the season. The girls put on another great team performance and ended up 28-20 winners. The girls now sit top of the table with two games remaining.
On Wednesday our U11 girls played their first game of the season at home to JESS Jumeirah. This was the girls first game together as a squad and came up against a seasoned side who looked like they had been playing together for years. There were some great baskets scored and the girls continued to develop as the game progressed. We look forward to them continuing to improve in their remaining fixtures.
Our U14 boys had a bye week, but other fixtures would determine if they were to qualify for the playoff semi-finals or not. Results went our way and the boys have qualified for the Division 1 playoff semifinal against DESC on June 14th. This is an incredible achievement in what was the school’s first ever time to compete in Division 1.
On Thursday our U14 girls travelled to JESS Ranches for their last group game of the season. The girls put up a great fight, but ultimately were let down by some squad players not attending practice this week. The girls can hold their heads up high in that they challenged in Division 1, as the first ever girls team to do so and were fantastic ambassadors for the school.
Also on Thursday our U11 boys travelled to DBS Jumeirah where they came up a very strong side with some fantastic players. This was a great learning curve for our boys, who now know the levels they need to get to in order to compete against schools in this division.
We hosted the last secondary gala of this academic year on Thursday with 4 other schools in attendance. The students were magnificent and own a number of individual and relay races. A fantastic end to our secondary swimming calendar.
