Week Thirty - May 5th, 2023
Dear Parents & Guardians,
Welcome to another week.
I would like to start this week by congratulating all of the students who participated in the MUN conference held at GEMS Winchester last weekend. Twenty three students participated in the three day event, supported by Mr Jake, Ms Helen, Ms Sangita, Ms Meena and Ms Rena. We had a lot of students who participated for the first time, and who did very well indeed. However, special mention must go to Ella McCluskey, Malavika Ram and Yassin Hamroosh. Malavika and Ella won “Best Delegate” for their respective committees, and Yassin won “Best Position Paper” for his. What an excellent result. Huge thank you to the staff mentioned above who chaperoned and gave up their own private time to accompany and support our students. Thank you and well done.
Today our Grade 11 TOK students found themselves in the spotlight as they hosted the TOK exhibition. The TOK exhibition is a relatively new aspect of TOK, last year being the first year it became a requirement. It is a mandatory, individual aspect of the TOK course involving students choosing three ‘objects’ and an IA prompt; and writing a commentary to demonstrate how TOK concepts manifest in the real world! It was fascinating to see how our students did this and the many great connections they made. I would like to thank Mr Osman Yavasca for coordinating and planning this event, and for his guidance and support of our students. Well done to all the students involved and to the other staff involved in the exhibition also.
Our DP and CP coordinators, Ms Burcu and Ms Mariona, held a very important ConnectEd today for parents of Grade 11 students. The session focused on transition from Grade 11 into Grade 12, important dates in the coming year and the assessment requirements that are remaining for each subject. Should you have missed the session and you have a child in Grade 11, please do ensure that you access the slides below.
This week, it gave me great pleasure to participate in the Sheikha Fatima Award ceremony. Grade 10 and 11 students gathered in the MPH, while other grades zoomed in from classrooms to see Ms Jeeya Mahajan be awarded the Sheikha Fatima award for 2023. This is a very prestigious awarded presented to a female in all GEMS schools. Jeeya is a very deserving recipient and it was wonderful to celebrate her successes yesterday in front of her peers. Well done Jeeya!
We continue to wish our Grade 12 students well as they continue with their exams next week. Business Management, English, Physics, Geography, Global Politics and ESS have all had at least one paper assessed so far. They have been mixed reviews from students, but most are happy with the majority of papers so far. Good luck everyone – we wish you well!
Best wishes
Amanda Murphy

Last year, the amazing Student ELT launched the Secondary Student Hub for secondary students. This is an ongoing collaborative project between the Student ELT, Inclusion Team & Grade Leaders.
The Secondary Student Hub will remain the students access point for the new social groups and peer mentoring, as well as signing up for the already established peer tutoring programme.
Students will also be able to find links to ECAs, student voice initiative, counsellor referral forms, mindset matters and homeroom information. We are really proud of the work that the Student ELT have put in to this so far and look forward to seeing their expansion of the site.
*Students must be logged into their gemsisak gmail account to access the site.

Grade 6
G6 students have been learning about food vocabulary from French and Spanish speaking countries. Here are some students trying to connect the new vocabulary they are learning to make a continuous circle.
Grade 6
In a recent lesson about horses, grade 6 students honed their listening and teamwork skills while discussing vocabulary, main ideas, and questions. They also analyzed a descriptive text to develop their communication skills and gain a deeper understanding of text features. Through this lesson, students improved their language skills and ability to communicate effectively with others. Overall, it was a successful exercise in collaborative learning.

Digital devices, such as smartphones and tablets, make online platforms and content easily accessible. And, while there are many benefits of seamless accessibility and connectivity, there are also many potential risks - to the health, well-being and even the safety of young people - that must be considered by young people themselves, as well as by parents and schools. Technological advances are faster than ever and new online platforms are released at a rapid rate, making it challenging to effectively monitor and control (for their own well-being) the online activity of the young people in our care.
Young people will, at times, seek out and/or be inadvertently exposed to inappropriate online content. If and when this is the case, it is important that they feel comfortable and confident to disclose and discuss the matter with trusted adults. While banning smart devices may not be practical (or desirable), implementing agreements around device usage (for instance) is a healthy and productive approach to online media balance and safety. There are a number of useful tips and strategies available to support healthy and well-informed approaches to media use. Please take some time to explore the E-safety: Parent Guidance, which has been created to support GIS parents in this regard.
