ISSUE 16: Sending out an SOS
In a high-achieving environment like GIS, students often feel the pressure to excel academically and socially. This pressure can sometimes lead to stress, anxiety, and other mental health challenges. Research consistently shows that asking for help is a critical step in managing these issues effectively. According to a study by Gulliver et al. (2010), students who seek help early are more likely to recover from mental health issues and perform better academically.
At GIS, we have established a comprehensive support system to ensure that every student has access to the help they need. Our network includes a team of dedicated school counselors who are trained to provide emotional and psychological support. These counselors are available for individual sessions, group therapy, and workshops that address common student concerns such as stress management, study skills, and social relationships.
Understanding that some students may feel uncomfortable approaching counselors directly, we have implemented student self-referral systems. These systems allow students to confidentially request a meeting with a counselor through online forms (QR codes) around the school. This ensures that help is accessible and stigma-free, promoting a culture where seeking support is seen as a strength rather than a weakness.
Respect and trust are central to our support systems. We believe that students are more likely to seek help if they trust that their concerns will be handled with confidentiality and sensitivity. Our counselors and staff are committed to creating a safe and welcoming environment where students feel respected and valued. By fostering open communication and mutual respect, we empower students to take control of their wellbeing and reach their full potential.
Sending out an SOS is not a sign of weakness; it is a proactive step towards maintaining your mental health and achieving your goals. At GIS, we are committed to supporting our students through a robust network of counselors and self-referral systems, underpinned by our values of respect, trust, and ambition. Let us continue to work together to create a thriving community where everyone feels empowered to seek the help they need.
