Week Thirty - May 17th, 2024
Grade 11
DP1 biology students are conducting a calorimetry experiment to determine the caloric content of two different types of food: marshmallows, which are primarily carbohydrate-based, and peanuts, which are rich in lipids. Working in pairs, each duo is tasked with performing a single trial on each food item. They will measure the energy released by burning the foods to heat water, using the change in water temperature to calculate the amount of energy in calories. After completing their trials, students will collect and process their data as class data. This collective analysis will include calculating the standard deviation, conducting a statistical test to evaluate the significance of their results, and comparing their empirical findings to theoretical values. By pooling their data, the students gain a broader perspective on the variability and reliability of their measurements, enhancing their understanding of scientific inquiry and data analysis.
Grade 10
We had the pleasure of having Mr. Simon join our class. Our group has been preparing for grade 11 by taking a deeper look at ethical dilemmas. By preparing students to think critically, analyze different perspectives, and communicate respectfully, students will be more prepared for CP and DP, and for communicating clearly as conflicts arise. Thanks Mr. Simon for being part of our group.
