Week Two - September 8th, 2023
Dear Parents,
I hope that you are well.
It has been such a pleasure to meet parents this week, at our Primary School ‘Early Childhood Parent Orientation’ and Secondary School ‘Back to School Evenings’. If you missed these in the busy start to the term, the highlights are posted within the Primary and Secondary sections of this newsletter. Please do also keep an eye out for ‘ConnectEds’, which have proven to be an excellent way to understand aspects of our IB programme, as explained by leaders here. My thanks to the leadership teams for organizing so many presentations this week.
Professional development of our staff is always popular at GIS, and our teachers are always keen to learn. We all recognize we are on a learning journey, as are our students. I enjoyed many sessions on Thursday after school and I commend all the presenters. Ms Emma Johnson presented to staff on how children learn languages and specifically how we can help all our second language learners to excel. In the photo below you can see Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. It was wonderful to put ourselves into the shoes of our learners.
It has been a pleasure to hear our talented students playing the piano at the beginning of the school day. Ms Romien regales us regularly and this week we had special guests. All students are welcome to perform. My thanks to Avin C and Elina P, both from G10, for their willingness to entertain us.
Finally, I shall be sending all parents a survey, which relates to the traffic situation. I would like to instigate a larger ‘stagger’ (time gap) between our school and our neighbor, WEK. If enough parents agree, we shall then gain approval from KHDA. This survey will be with you by Monday, so please do respond to it. You will also soon receive a letter from GEMS which outlines the timelines for the exit road opening. I am also initiating a meeting with Emaar, so that I can more directly represent your views. May I also politely request: please be respectful to other drivers and also to the security guards. The security and safety of our children come first. Dangerous driving and rudeness to other parents or to our staff, even when frustrated, do not align with the school values and will not be tolerated. Thank you for your understanding.
Kind regards,
Save the date to celebrate this big milestone with GIS! More details will follow soon.
