Week Twenty - February 9th, 2024
Dear Parents,
It was such a pleasure to see children enjoying ‘World Read Aloud Day’ on Wednesday. As we know from research, reading aloud to our children has many beneficial effects on literacy and learning. I thank Ms Louise for organizing the day and for inviting staff and parents to read to our students. This year I enjoyed reading to French speaking children in their own language, as part of Ms Emma’s drive to include a range of GIS languages!
Little was I to know that someone would also read aloud to me on Friday! I was delighted that Ms Aimee brought Anthony M (PreK) to my office. Anthony began his unit of inquiry by exploring the book ‘The Scribble Spot’, learning all about colors of emotions. Anthony then decided to write his own book about what makes him feel different emotions. Here is a photo of Anthony reading to me from his own creation!
On the subject of families, I was proud to be invited to the GEMS ‘Family First’ launch this week, accompanied by two of our GIS families and Ms Helen. This new initiative aims to bring our GEMS families together and promote family values such as love and care among our students. Family connections are vital in the lives of children, playing a crucial role in shaping their development as they grow into adults. At the same time, these connections enrich the lives of older generations, creating a never-ending circle of learning and sharing.
Our culture of Respect, Trust and Ambition was exemplified by one of our youngest students this week. Alisa M (KG1A) created a ‘coloring in’ exercise for all her classmates by drawing a eighteen beautiful pictures for all eighteen students in her class, even with their name on the top. Her classmates loved coloring in the pictures and told me how kind Alisa had been! She thoroughly deserves her Principal’s Commendation from me.
GEMS Education hosted the 7th GEMS Global Innovation Challenge (GIC). The GIC invites students from all GEMS Schools to harness the power of technology in crafting visionary solutions for the world's most pressing issues. Two teams from GIS participated in the competition under the categories of 'Food' and 'Education.' and secured a podium finish in their respective categories. Very well done to Riti P, Krishnna P and Maria C for gaining Silver in the Food category with their product which checks a food’s quality even after expiration, using pressure sensors. Moonkang C, Jasim K, Lucjan Z and Fatima I gained Bronze in the Education section for an app prototype which provides free educational courses for all, from kindergarten to adult. Thank you to Mr Sujay and Mr Anaswer for coaching the teams.
Finally, my thanks to all teachers and teaching assistants who have been involved in Week Without Walls. This is a huge responsibility and one our teachers take seriously. Taking students off campus, even for one day, is a major endeavour, and we know the students appreciate this.
Kind regards and a wonderful midterm break,
