Week Eighteen - January 26th, 2024
Dear Parents,
Our students have been so impressive this week, not only in the classroom. I was fortunate to be able to present two ‘Principal’s Commendations’. Firstly, to Sanaa F in Grade 2, who produced a superb and clear video on Arabic language learning, from daily routine to clothing choices! Well done Sanaa and thank you to Ms Sara Hamdi for showing me this. Secondly, I witnessed a lovely act of kindness in our school playground when Kainaat P (KG1C) invited a classmate to join in and sit next to her on the airplane, even though she was enjoying a solo flight! Kindness starts young and this was an example of our values displayed at their best.
‘Music Mornings’ is a lovely event created by the student Arts Committee, welcoming students and parents with music on Friday morning. This will take place every Friday morning, allowing our student singers and musicians to perform in front of a small audience, and more importantly to brighten our day, as Ms Romien does from Monday to Thursday! In today’s performance, Ananya T sang a beautiful rendition of ‘Viva la Vida’ by Coldplay, Jeet M showcased ‘Until I found you’ on the guitar accompanied by vocals, and Sanjna T concluded the performances with a piano piece titled ‘Gallop Final’ by Alfredo Casella.
On the subject of events, we have the amazing GIS International Day taking place on the afternoon of Friday 23rd February. My thanks in advance to our GISPA Executive and all they are doing, which includes seeking your help and input. We have 99 nationalities in our school, so let’s see how many countries will be represented! Please do try to volunteer if at all possible.
Providing amazing pathways and opportunities for our students is a real passion of GIS educators. We were commended for this by Schools Compared and our KHDA colleagues, so this week I was absolutely delighted to meet the team from SUMAS (Sustainable Management School). With campuses on Lake Geneva and in Milan, and as an IB authorized provider of the Career-related Programme, SUMAS is a forward-thinking organization which would like to link to GIS. Our students will benefit hugely! Sustainable management is absolutely at the cutting-edge, and we shall be one of the only schools in the UAE to have such a partnership.
My thanks to Mr Ged, CP Coordinator, for setting up the meeting and being so committed to the partnership. Here is a photo of the meeting between SUMAS reps and the GIS team.
On the subject of careers and opportunities, our University Guidance Counsellor, Ms Meena, has been busy again, but this time on television! Ms Meena, a natural in front of camera, appeared on Dubai One on Wednesday evening, to talk about career guidance, GAP years and overall student direction. Well done Ms Meena for representing GIS and GEMS so well – we are very proud of you!
Our Eco-environment and Sustainability Coordinator, Ms Anrie, has asked for your support with plastic bottles. Please see the poster. Ms Anrie says ‘We have collected 4160kg of recycled materials since July and we can definitely push it to at least double!’
Kind regards and have a good weekend,
