ISSUE 10: Incorporating Mindfulness into the School Day
I hope this message finds you in good health and high spirits. As we continue to move through term two, our Senior students are about to complete their Trial Exams, Grade 10 students have just participated in a successful Personal Project Exhibition and everybody else is looking forward to Week Without Walls. As always, there is a lot going on in GIS. This is why in this week’s article, I wanted to shine a light on the power of ‘mindfulness.’ In our busy school, where every moment seems to demand our attention and full concentration, taking time to incorporate mindfulness strategies can really make a difference.
Mindfulness practices, such as meditation and breathing exercises, reduce stress and enhance wellbeing. (Greenberg & Harris, 2012) In our bustling school environment, these practices can serve as invaluable tools for both students and teachers. By taking a few moments each day to ground ourselves through mindfulness, we can cultivate an atmosphere of calm and focus, helping us work at our best for longer.
Regular mindfulness in schools improves attention, behavior, and emotional regulation. (Black et al., 2015) In an age of constant distractions, helping students develop these crucial skills is paramount. Through mindfulness, we empower our students to navigate challenges with resilience and poise, preparing them for a lifetime of success.
Implementing mindfulness in the daily routine supports student mental health. (Jennings & Greenberg, 2009) Mental health is a cornerstone of overall well-being. By integrating mindfulness into our school day, we create an environment where students feel supported, heard, and equipped to manage the complexities of growing up. As we attempt to incorporate opportunities for mindfulness into our advisory curriculum, I would urge students to use resources online to start to do this independently.
As we continue to work towards a culture with well-being at its heart, remaining mindful of our own physical, mental and emotional state is an important start to ensuring our community members are in the best possible position to positively influence their own wellbeing.
