Week Fourteen - December 8th, 2023
Dear Parents,
This has been such an event-filled week that I have picked a few highlights! My advice is to dip into Ms Kim’s or Ms Amanda’s newsletter for a full review of Primary and Secondary.
As ever, the students have brought the school to life and my week was enhanced by some welcome visitors to my office. Firstly, I was able to commend Sanchitha B (6D) as the winner of the Secondary School anti-bullying poster competition. She did an incredible job producing a poster, which stood out among fifteen other strong entrants. GIS has no time for unkindness to others and I was so impressed by the catchy and meaningful messages on Sanchita’s poster. We really encourage our students to live these values.
On Thursday my office door burst open for a wonderful group of our Tareeqi Program students, who arrived with festive gifts that they had made for me – what a privilege! I had just had a lunch meeting, so they were able to tuck into some treats too. My thanks to all these students for their kind gesture.
I was privileged to accompany a group of students, invited by Mr Tompkins (GEMS for Life), to attend a very special panel presentation at the Museum of the Future. It is not every day that one is able to meet astronauts and the Administrator of NASA! In the words of Prany N (G10): “I had the chance to meet Senator Bill Nelson and Emirati astronauts Sultan Al Neyodi and Hazzaa Al Mansouri. Senator Nelson’s powerful explanation of the ‘Overview Effect’ made me shift my consciousness, based on the astronauts’ experience when observing Earth from orbit, which highlights the vulnerability and interdependence of our planet. I have completely changed the way I think about humanity’s place in the universe.”
Nizi Z (G11) created this amazing video of the event. Please take a look:
Two other visits provided students with extraordinary opportunities this week. Our Grade 2s headed to COP28. Ms Melissa, Grade 2 Leader, explained how the G2 children explored how technology is fighting climate issues. Ms Melissa added, “Highlights included a stunning life tree with see-through TV screens, VR headsets for ocean protection talks, a cool 3D printer making pots out of recycled materials and solar power designs coming soon to the UAE. The trip integrated our Unit Of Inquiry classroom learning with real-world solutions, inspiring our students to be environmental advocates.”
Other students were also fortunate to be invited to hear a Nobel Laureate speak. Hritika B from Grade 12 described the event, “We were so honored to listen to the distinguished Nobel Laureate Myron Scholes; GIS DP economics students acquired knowledge on the following topics of interest: managing under uncertainty and innovative finance. As an aspiring Bcom student myself, I found myself intrigued by the Q&A regarding the Black-Schole equation. I posed a question as to whether the equation had adapted to current trends and in response, Mr Scholes quipped, ‘I will be dead by the time I can generalize the equation.’ It was refreshing for us students to be part of such a prestigious event and I am grateful for the opportunity.”
Along with all the above, and several holiday-themed events, the Secondary School managed to slot in Sports Day. My thanks to Dr Rana and GWA for the use of their athletics track, and to Mr Chris and department for the huge organization in the final week of term.
Finally, I am not sure where the term has gone! It doesn’t seem so long ago that I was writing my first newsletter of the year to you. So much has happened and so many highlights in our busy and dynamic school. My thanks to staff, students and parents for making this a term to remember, and may I wish you all a well-earned break, whatever you are doing and wherever you will be. I look forward to welcoming you back on January 2nd, 2024!
Best wishes and have a wonderful holiday.
At the start of the new term, GISPA will be hosting a variety of fun and creative activities for parents of GIS, as a way to continue strengthening our community bond.
We look forward to connecting with you all. Please stay tuned!
