Week Eleven - November 17th, 2023
Grade 6-10
We are now three-quarters of the way through the Dubai Fitness Challenge activities in PE, with the majority of MYP students having been involved with activities, as the Grade 9 and 10 advisory games took place this week. With the options of football and benchball, students have been competing against their rival homerooms, as we aim to discover the champions of each grade! The action continues next week, with more student events and a staff badminton competition, as well as the ‘Team Kit Day’ on Friday 24th November, where students can wear their favourite team’s sports kit to school that day.
The Jaguar sports squads are still proving to be successful across a number of competitions, with recent impressive performances from the Swim Squad and the football and basketball teams. The U19 girls basketball team secured their biggest victory of the season recently, defeating their opponents 45 – 15, and the U16 boys football team took a huge step towards winning their league, by defeating Dubai British School JP 2-0. A special shout out to the U14 girls football team’s 3 – 0 victory against JESS also. 8 students will compete at the DASSA Secondary Gymnastics competition soon, in the individual events, and these students have been practicing before school for the last few weeks, so we are excited to see what they can produce during the competition.
MYP PHE lessons are looking at the coaching and leadership process, in particular how students can reflect on performance, and then make improvements. As Sports Day looms on the horizon, students have also had the chance to practice some of the track and field events that they will compete during Sports Day.
Grade 7
This week, grade 7 textile design students have started the production of their final products for their current unit, Felt Monsters. Students were tasked with designing a creature based on the designer ‘The Felt Mistress’, and using their newly acquired technical skills are independently making their products! We are all looking forward to seeing their finished monsters!
Coffee Morning
The Secondary Arabic Department hosted an incredible coffee morning for our amazing parents. We are very grateful for the engaging discussions and shared moments. The discussion was about the assessment techniques and how teachers prepared MYP students for the diploma program. Additionally, parents shared suggestions regarding communication and expressed their specific needs in understanding how to support their kids in their learning journey.
Here’s to building a strong community together!
GIS’s KG2 class (Mrs. Narges’ class) came to visit the MYP to explore the instruments of the orchestra and see what they look and sound like. KG2 has been learning about the Community, and how the orchestra is one of those communities, where all instruments work together like a team, helping each other make beautiful music. Kids have been learning about the four orchestral families (Woodwind, Percussion, Brass and Strings), and got to see and try the woodwind and brass instruments in person.
