Week Eleven - November 17th, 2023
Dear Parents,
Literacy Week has been a huge success and our Primary students have been treated to wonderful read alouds, puppet shows and reading workshops given by our Secondary students. Our Secondary students learned all about poetry, from form and function, through to complex meter and rhythm. The whole school also enjoyed the buzz and excitement of a week-long book fair, hosted by Magrudys. My thanks to all involved, particularly Ms Louise, Ms Terri, Mr Lewis and Ms Alisha.
On Thursday we were delighted to accommodate the first GIS TEDx talks. This was the brainchild of Secondary student, Yusra F (G12). Yusra persuaded many students to take part, and our staff were taken aback by the quality of presentations, even from students as young as Grade 7. My thanks to all involved – please do read more about this in Ms Amanda’s newsletter.
We also saw the first Arabic Coffee Morning for Secondary School this week. Many parents joined and Ms Wafaa described the atmosphere as ‘vibrant, filled with enthusiasm and insightful conversations that left attendees feeling inspired and connected’. We truly value the views, suggestions and contributions shared by the parents present. My thanks to Ms Wafaa, the department members, and all parents who attended.
I was honored to represent all our GIS community on Thursday when accepting the Schools Compared Award for Best School in the UAE 2023 for STEAM. The awards this year had STEAM as a theme, so it was all the more pleasing to win this accolade. GIS was one of just five GEMS schools to win an award. We shall continue to excel in this area and ensure that both the Primary Innovation Hub and the Secondary Center of Excellence are visited by as many students as possible and fully integrated into the curriculum.
Thank you to parents for expressing your support when we contacted you early on Friday morning, to advise on the online/remote learning, and my thanks to Primary and Secondary staff and leadership for their quick reaction to ensure that learning passed as uninterrupted as possible. Our Facilities and Cleaning teams did a wonderful job from 5.30am, working hard to clean all affected areas, to stem any leakages and to make sure GIS is pristine for the return of the students. Here is a photo of some of them, still smiling despite the weather!
Finally, a polite request to complete the GEMS parental survey, if you haven’t already. You should have received an email with a personal link. If you haven’t, or cannot find this, please let our IT team know on itsupport_gis@gemsedu.com
Kind regards and have a good weekend,
Lit and Creativity Week
Terri Marks, Secondary Librarian
"This week has been an exciting Litfest Week for the Secondary students! Starting with the whole school book fair and leading up to the volunteer push-ins by Grade 11 and 12 students, who delivered poetry lessons to their younger peers in both secondary and primary. The week went off with a big bang from the poetry competitions and from our very first TED Talk event at GIS. A BIG congratulations to our poetry competition winners who were picked by a panel of student judges: Sophie Allen, Nina Sitdikova, and Foteni Fasoula".
