Week Eleven - November 11th 2022
Dear Parents,
We have an amazing staff here at GIS who model the best values to our students. This has been exemplified by Ms Rania, one of our GIS Receptionists, who is a champion swimmer! Ms Rania regularly swims in open water, including before school, and qualified for the World Championships which took place a week ago in Crete, Greece. Ms Rania swam 5K in a personal best time of 1h30, against 600 top open water swimmers from more than 50 countries around the world. We are so proud of her and hope the photos tell the story!
GIS is a school which celebrates its internationalism and global values, the diversity and broad range of nationalities of its families and staff. We want our students to follow our culture of Respect, Trust and Ambition. It was therefore so pleasing to watch a video and read an article created by the Emirates News Agency (WAM), which featured solely GIS children, talking about tolerance and the importance of diversity.
My special thanks to media expert and GIS parent, Ms Nancy Emile, who suggested the idea, and Mr Renan de Souza from WAM, for spending time with our incredible young people. In Mr Renan’s words, ‘To celebrate the International Day of Tolerance on November 16th, we are producing stories to show the world how diverse the UAE is. My project especially is to show the diversity in classrooms across the UAE. The idea is to write about how foreign and local kids learn from each other in international schools in the UAE and from different curriculums. The main point is to show the concept of diversity from the early stages of life and the UAE as a global community in education.’
We are very proud of all the students involved in the video and article which you can read HERE.
Congratulations this week to Mr Kirvin, in charge of Slices at GIS, and his team. Mr Paul Fowler, Managing Director of Slices, came to award the team with ‘Unit of the Month’, for their attention to compliance, customer service and overall performance. Well done Kirvin and team!
Finally, thank you to the parents who have already completed the GEMS survey. We appreciate your feedback and indeed your high ratings for recommending GIS. You will have received my letter about the survey and I am grateful to you for your time.
Have a lovely weekend.
Kind regards,
Simon Herbert
'In Person Discussion' - Neurodiverse Birthday Parties
Friday 18th November @ 8:30am - PYP Conference Room
The session is aimed at all parents who are interested in hosting inclusive social events such as birthday parties to ensure that children who may have sensory differences are enabled to participate with their peers.
The information is particularly relevant to parents/carers of neurodivergent students but would be useful for anyone who would like to gain insight into how sensory differences can affect a child’s everyday life and to learn about the small changes that we can make to social events to ensure that all children can take part and have fun.

The ambassador program was launched last year with the intention of helping connect families with their mother-tongue and country. Small community sub- groups have been created to help integrate new families from these specific countries as they enroll at GIS. Although as a whole we are one big family, it’s always nice to connect with those from our country. Please see the presentation to find your country and join the whatsapp group!

Due to Week Without Walls, we did not have any competitive fixtures this week.
We do however have a busy week of fixtures coming up next week. A special good luck must go to our U19 Boys Basketball Squad who take on Safa Community School in the semifinal on Monday. We are all rooting for you and are sure you will do the school proud.
Please see all of next week’s fixtures and squads HERE.
WEEK WITHOUT WALLS
This week we had 23 trips and camps take place across the school from Grade 3 – Grade 12.
Students were able to put their in class learning to the test in an environment outside of the classroom. Some of our international trips are still ongoing.
