Week One - September 1st, 2023
Dear Parents & Guardians,
As we resumed school this week, I would like to offer a warm welcome to returning families and new community members, to GIS. Our students are getting used to their new routines, teachers and classmates. Walls in classrooms are being brought back to life with refreshed student work and staff have commented on how impressed they are with student’s approach to their learning. What a wonderful start, let’s keep it up!
It can however, be difficult for some students at this stage of the year, to get back into the routines associated with being organized for school. So, I do congratulate those who have presented to school in correct uniform, are well rested and have fully charged laptops. A gentle reminder to parents though that school shoes should be plain black.
Finally, this week, I would like to remind parents of the upcoming Parent evenings for the Secondary School. Details of our Expectations, Culture & Curriculum Evenings are as follows:
MYP Tuesday Sept 5th

We look forward to seeing you all at the above meetings. Have a wonderful week ahead.
Best wishes
Amanda Murphy

Digital devices, such as smartphones and tablets, make online platforms and content easily accessible. And, while there are many benefits of seamless accessibility and connectivity, there are also many potential risks - to the health, well-being and even the safety of young people - that must be considered by young people themselves, as well as by parents and schools. Technological advances are faster than ever and new online platforms are released at a rapid rate, making it challenging to effectively monitor and control (for their own well-being) the online activity of the young people in our care.
Young people will, at times, seek out and/or be inadvertently exposed to inappropriate online content. If and when this is the case, it is important that they feel comfortable and confident to disclose and discuss the matter with trusted adults. While banning smart devices may not be practical (or desirable), implementing agreements around device usage (for instance) is a healthy and productive approach to online media balance and safety. There are a number of useful tips and strategies available to support healthy and well-informed approaches to media use. Please take some time to explore the E-safety: Parent Guidance, which has been created to support GIS parents in this regard.
Below are some examples from term three of the academic year 2022-23
Brace yourselves for a diverse range of captivating content, as we delve into the world of local and international news, explore the exciting events happening within our school, and indulge in an inspiring end-of-year song that will touch your hearts. But that's not all! Prepare to be delighted by the blooper reel, guaranteed to bring laughter and joy to your day.
Grade 10
To finish the year, grade 10 textiles students were challenged in groups to create an outfit out of 100% recycled or reused products in only 6! This challenged students to collaborate with their group members and to think outside the box! All students who participated were very happy with what they were able to achieve in such a short amount of time. Well done grade 10!
Grade 6
In a thrilling activity, Grade 6 students took on the role of forensic scientists, utilizing their STEM skills to analyze their own fingerprints and solve a forensic crime. They began by learning about fingerprint patterns and identifying their own unique prints. Armed with this knowledge, the students formed teams and were presented with a simulated crime scene. They analyzed fingerprints to identify the culprit. Through this engaging experience, the students developed problem-solving, critical thinking, and collaboration skills while gaining a deeper appreciation for the application of science in real-life scenarios.
Grade 6
Students shared information about their culture through food. Each student brought a dish from their country and had a choice of researching their food, writing a description, or creating a presentation of what they brought.
Artemiy Yarovoi (6A) brought Karak tea to share and researched the following information.
Anastasia Pisareva (6A) prepared Bilini’s with fruit and prepared a presentation.
