Week One - September 1st, 2023
Dear Parents,
I do hope that you enjoyed the summer break, wherever you were.
It is with great pleasure that I write to you today and extend the warmest welcome back to our ‘existing’ families and a huge welcome to all our ‘new’ families! It has been lovely to see familiar faces coming through the front entrance of the school and I hope to get to know all our new students and families in due course.
I would like to commend our students for being so kind and welcoming to their peers, and to appreciate what it feels like to join a new school. We are known for our warm community and I thank all our families in advance for welcoming our new members of GIS.
I enjoyed the summer break and have now been back in Dubai for several weeks to prepare for the new term. Our Orientation Program for new members of staff ran very successfully. I would like to reiterate that our turnover of teachers was again very small indeed, at just 13% (one of the lowest in the GEMS group). It is the growth of the school that has led to the employment of many new teachers, and I am delighted by the way they have immersed themselves into the culture of GIS already. I would like to thank our Assistant Heads of School for the creation of the Orientation Program, our HR team for helping new teachers to onboard, and to all those who have given time to support our new colleagues. The Program took place in mid-August and was filled with useful presentations and input from current leaders and members of staff. This has helped our colleagues to understand GIS, its systems, protocols and ethos, along with life in Dubai.
Ms Meena, our University Guidance Counsellor, was particularly busy during the summer. You will be pleased to know that we support the professional development of our staff and we thought it beneficial to send Ms Meena to gain first-hand experience of a range of universities, this time in Australia. Universities around the world have different systems for entry and it is crucial that we maintain up-to-date knowledge of all. My thanks to Ms Meena for going and also my huge congratulations to her for winning the Rising Star Award across UAE and Qatar from GEMS, highlighting her commitment to preparing students for the future through effective careers planning using the Unifrog platform.
On Wednesday we thanked our Emirati women colleagues for their work, as we celebrated Emirati Women’s Day. It is a pleasure to work in such a diverse school and to learn about our host culture from those who were born and bred in the UAE.
Thank you to all parents who have shared their thoughts with me on the traffic situation. I will always do what I can for GIS, even if some aspects are beyond my control. I had several meetings with GEMS central and also updates on RTA’s and Emaar’s plans during the summer (please see the boards at the school entrance for a physical representation). We aim to allow the term to settle in and then to review, particular as the RTA exit road change will come into force; you are likely to receive a survey from me in due course, which will result in a larger gap between our neighbors’ timings and our own. In the meantime, thank you for your patience and for driving safely with due concern for others.
With my kindest regards,
gispa@gemsisak.com
