What I worked on:
During my job shadowing experience with Dr. Bashar Hallak, I got to see a variety of dental procedures, including cleanings and fillings. A big part of my role was assisting with cleaning and sterilizing the tools, which was a bit intimidating at first since I wasn’t familiar with all the equipment. Dr. Hallak took the time to explain each tool as he used it, which helped me understand their specific purposes. I learned that every tool has a precise role, whether it’s for cleaning, filling, or examining, and how important it is to make sure everything is properly sterilized to prevent infections.
Reflection:
I was initially overwhelmed by all the different tools and the level of precision needed in dentistry. However, Dr. Hallak’s detailed explanations helped me understand the purpose behind each tool and the importance of proper sterilization. It was a valuable learning experience to see how every piece of equipment plays a crucial role in ensuring the procedure goes smoothly and safely. I’m glad I had the chance to help with the cleaning, as it gave me hands-on exposure to what’s involved in maintaining a sterile environment.
Comments from my mentor:
“You seemed confused, but you'll catch up”

What I worked on:
I spent most of the day watching regular cleanings and checkups. The dentist explained how to read dental X-rays and pointed out what early cavities can look like. I also got to watch him do a filling, which was really interesting.
Reflection:
Honestly, I didn’t expect dentistry to be so precise. Watching the dentist work up close made me realize how steady and focused you need to be. He made patients feel comfortable and explained everything in a simple way. That part really stuck with me. It made me think more seriously about going into this career.
Comments from my mentor:
“You paid close attention and weren’t afraid to ask questions. That’s a great trait to have in dentistry, keep it up.”

What I worked on:
Today I helped clean and organize tools between appointments and watched a few crown fittings. I also got to see how they use different materials for fillings and how they choose the best one depending on the tooth.
Reflection:
I never realized how much effort goes into making sure a tooth looks natural after treatment. The dentist spent time matching colors and making sure everything felt right for the patient. It showed me that dentistry really is both a science and an art. It gave me a whole new appreciation for the job.
Comments from my mentor:
“You’ve got a calm and professional vibe, which patients will definitely appreciate. You’d do well in this environment.”

What I worked on:
I got to see a little bit of everything from how the front desk handles scheduling, to watching a full root canal. I also learned how they clean and prep the instruments, which is more complicated than I thought.
Reflection:
Watching the root canal was kind of intense, but also really cool. It was amazing to see how focused the dentist was during the whole thing. I realized how important teamwork is in a dental office too everyone had a role, and it all ran super smoothly.
Comments from my mentor:
“You seemed really focused and asked the right kinds of questions. I can see you doing well in this career if you stay curious and keep learning.”

What I worked on:
On my last day, I got to shadow a few different procedures, including a deep cleaning and a tooth extraction. I also spent time asking the dentist questions about his journey and the steps he took to open his own practice. It was a great mix of hands-on observation and career advice.
Reflection:
This whole experience really opened my eyes to what being a dentist is actually like. It’s not just about fixing teeth—there’s a lot of problem-solving, communication, and leadership involved too. I’ve learned so much about how the office runs and how important it is to build trust with patients. It confirmed that this is something I want to pursue, and I’m really thankful for the opportunity.
Comments from my mentor:
“I’ve really enjoyed having you here. You’re observant, professional, and asked great questions throughout. If you decide to go into dentistry, I think you’ll do great. Best of luck, and stay in touch.”
