Week of June 21

(Monday) Happy Summer! Information was sent home about Primary Fun day which is on Friday. Also, our class Water Fun afternoon will be on Wednesday.

(Tuesday) Tomorrow is our Heritage Railway field trip. Please remember a mask and closed-toe footwear. Also, remember all of your gear for Water Fun (in the afternoon).

(Wednesday) What a fun day! We had a great field trip to the Kamloops Heritage Railway. We also had so much fun getting wet during our Water Fun Afternoon!

(Thursday) Today was Smoothie and Bubble Day. The student unanimously feel that Mr. Law makes the BEST smoothies. Tomorrow is Primary Fun Day.

(Friday) Fun Day was Fun! Thank you to our PAC for bringing all of the students Freezies. Monday is school spirit day. Wear school colours, dress like a bee, pull out your school swag. We may do a short neighbourhood walk if it is not too hot.

Week of June 14

(Monday) Chocolate bar order forms sent home today.

(Tuesday) We did an introduction to telling time today. Students are encouraged to look for clocks and practise telling time.

(Wednesday) Our Big / Little Science Centre field trip is quickly approaching. Students will need a mask.

(Thursday) Our field trip to the Big / Little Science Centre is tomorrow.

(Friday) We had a great field trip today. Sorry for the short notice, but I was able to squeeze in another field trip which will take place on Wednesday, June 23. We will be going to the Kamloops Heritage Railway.

Week of June 7

(Monday) Welcome to a new week! We are talking about vegetables this week. I encourage students to try a new vegetable some time this week.

(Tuesday) A book order was sent home today. Class Code is: RC184301.

(Wednesday) A permission form went home today for the Big / Little Science Centre. There is no charge for students as I am using left over classroom funds to treat students. Hopefully, there will be enough let over for a 'treat' one day too.

(Thursday) Practise the Weekly Words tonight!

(Friday) Class photo was sent home today.

Week of May 31

(Monday) Remember library books tomorrow. Also, it is 'Bike to School' Week. We know it is not realistic for all students to bike to school, but we are encouraging students to take a few extra minutes each evening to be active (running, jumping, walking, biking, dancing, etc.). I am also encouraging students to think about ways of caring for the environment. For example, leaving the car at home can be helpful to the environment.

(Tuesday) It was a hot day today. Please remember to send water bottles to school with students.

(Wednesday) We have talking about 3-D shapes. Students are encouraged to look for 3-D shapes around their home.

(Thursday) Friday is Orange Shirt Day. We are encouraging students to wear an orange shirt.

(Friday) Have a wonderful weekend. Read a good book. Write a good sentence.

Week of May 25

(Tuesday) I hope everybody had a good long weekend. Wheels week kicked off today. Remember our class is invited to bring bikes on Thursday, and scooters or skateboards on Friday.

(Wednesday) If you are able, bring your bike and a helmet to school tomorrow.

(Thursday) We had a lot of fun with bikes today. If you are able, bring a scooter or skateboard and helmet on Friday.

(Friday) Wheels Week has wrapped up, and it was 'Wheely' Fun! We have been talking about tuning into interesting words when reading. I encourage students to read this weekend and collect some interesting words.

Week of May 17

(Monday) We are going to be doing our school Jump Rope for Heart on Thursday. Information was sent home today. Remember library day is tomorrow. Also remember there is no school on Friday.

(Tuesday) I am encouraging students to practise the Weekly Words tonight, as it is a short week. Jump Rope for Heart Activities will be on Thursday afternoon. No school on Friday (Professional Development Day). Also, there is no school on Monday (Victoria Day). We have been working on compound words this week. See if your child can identify some compound words.

(Wednesday) Jump Rope for Heart events will take place tomorrow! Students are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing, and good footwear. If it is hot out, it would be helpful for students to have water bottles too.

(Thursday) Remember there is no school on Friday or Monday. Have a great Long Weekend!

(Monday) Welcome to a new week! New Meals and Pizza forms were sent home today. We learned about Cardinal Directions today (north, east, south, west). You may want to practise these at home.

(Tuesday) We are examining maps and globes. Students are encouraged to see if they can find a map or a globe around their home.

(Wednesday) A note went home today about an upcoming School Spirit Day . . . Rainbow Day. Let's see how colourful we can make our school.

(Thursday) A note was sent home about an upcoming event at Bert Edwards Science and Technology School . . . Wheels Week!

(Friday) Remember it is Rainbow Day on Monday. A book order was sent home today too. Class code is: RC184301.

Week of May 3

(Monday) Here we are in May already! Keep reading with your child every night. Last week students presented the presentations that they had been working on with Ms. Kipp! Excellent job students! Remember tomorrow is library day.

(Tuesday) We were having fun finding facts about Canada this afternoon. Students are encouraged to try to find another fun fact about Canada this evening.

(Wednesday) Students are encouraged to practise counting by fives this evening.

(Thursday) Remember to practise your Weekly Words each week.

(Friday) Find some time to curl up with a good book this weekend.

Week of April 26

(Monday) Professional Development Day. I attended some very interesting workshops. I hope students had a great day off!

(Tuesday) Sadly we have to say "Good-Bye" to our two TRU Teacher Candidates tomorrow.

(Wednesday) We are working on being word detectives, and looking for words with 'ph' and 'gh' (making the 'f' sound).

(Thursday) Our marble jar filled up today! Good news, we have earned an electronics, pajama, and gum day with Ms. Weber's class. Sorry for the short notice, but today was just that GOOD!

(Friday) Such a fun, relaxing day! We love Electronics, PJ, and Gum Day! Have a great weekend!

(Monday) Another sunny day! Remember is tomorrow is library day. Challenge yourself to read and write for at least ten minutes tonight. You may even want to do this outside.

(Tuesday) We are being word detectives and looking for words with a 'th.'

(Wednesday) It was a BIG Math day today. Students challenged their Math thinking. Tomorrow is Earth Day. We will be spending some time at the river tomorrow afternoon.

Week of April 6

(Tuesday) It sounds like students had a good Long Weekend, and some chocolate was consumed. Tomorrow is our Day of Sucwentwecw. Students will be participating in a variety of activities and learning together in memory, history, and story using Aboriginal perspectives.

(Wednesday) It was a wonderful Day of Sucwentwewc today. Be sure to ask your children about all of the activities they participated in. To continue to celebrate this amazing land we live on, we are going to walk to the river tomorrow and spend some time outside learning and exploring.

(Thursday) We had so much fun at the river today. Please note, information came home today about next week's Point of Progress. I am available to do ZOOM Meetings or phone calls on Wednesday. All students will receive an informal report before the end of next week.

Week of March 29

(Monday) This is only a four day school week. Friday is Good Friday, so no school for students. Remember it is library day tomorrow.

(Tuesday) Help your child to be a word detective. Look for words that have a 'ch.'

Week of March 22

(Monday) I hope everybody had a good Spring Break. It was so great to see the students again today. Remember tomorrow is library day.

(Tuesday) We have been learning about British Columbia. I encourage students to look at an image of the flag of British Columbia and try to draw it.

(Wednesday) We have some Purdy's Chocolate Bars to sell. An order form went home today with students for chocolate bars. $2.00 per bar. I received some great British Columbia flags today. Well done, students and families.

(Thursday) Friday is Jersey Day! Wear your favourite jersey and show some school spirit.

(Friday) Have a great weekend! Read and play some board games this weekend.

(Monday) This is the last week of school before Spring Break. We are talking about water conservation. Think of ways you can save water at home. Remember tomorrow is library day. Tomorrow is also our Smudge Ceremony.

(Monday) It's hard to believe it is March already. Spring feels like it is in the air. Remember tomorrow is library day.

(Tuesday) We have started talking about water erosion. I encourage students to look for signs of water erosion when they are out for a walk.

(Wednesday) Book orders were sent home today. Our class code is: RC184301. Students were very excited today to begin 2-digit addition. Keep looking for signs of erosion.

(Thursday) A green class note was sent home with some information about some activities that are happening next week.

(Monday) Yippee! We are 100 Days Smarter! Remember library books tomorrow.

(Tuesday) Wednesday is Pink Shirt Day!

(Wednesday) What a great day! We observed so many acts of kindness.

(Thursday) We practised counting by fives and doing our five times tables. I am encouraging students to practise this at home tonight.

Week of February 16

(Tuesday) It's nice to have some warmer weather back this week. I hope everybody had a restful and relaxing long weekend.

(Wednesday) We have been discussing how things change over time. Students are encouraged to talk to a family member about how things have changed since they were a child.

(Thursday) It is hard to believe the week is just about done. We had a ZOOM with the City of Kamloops today discussing the water cycle and the water shed model. Talk to your students about the water cycle.

(Friday) I cannot believe the week is done already. Have a great day! It's our 100th Day of School on Monday.

Week of February 8

(Monday) It was a cold day today, but it was also great to see the sunshine. Please remember with Valentine's Day coming, students are only permitted to bring paper cards. Library Day is tomorrow.

(Tuesday) A note about Valentine's Day was sent home today. Again, we know students are disappointed, but our direction is paper cards only. Please avoid adding treats, or toys, etc. Thank you for your understanding.

(Wednesday) It was a cold day today. Yes, it was an inside day. Remember to send warm clothes with your child. Also, try to drop off your child as close to 8:25 as possible. Tonight, have your child cuddle up in a warm blanket and read.

(Thursday) Students are invited to bring their Valentine's Day cards tomorrow. Please follow the guidelines as set out by Mr. Law and the School District. Thank you!

(Friday) Wishing everybody a great (warm) long weekend. Happy Chinese New Year! Happy Valentine's Day! Happy Family Day! And yes . . . even Happy Flag Day! A new meals form was sent home today, as well as, a new pizza form.

Week of February 1

(Monday) We go skating this week, please let Ms. Chernoff know if your child needs skates. Remember to sign and return the report card envelopes. Please return Unplug and Play forms for the chance to win a prize. Library Day is tomorrow.

(Tuesday) Skating tomorrow! Yippee!!! Remember students need a mask for on the bus and in the arena (when not on the ice). Students also need skates and a helmet. I have found a pair of skates for all students who indicated they needed skates.

(Wednesday) We had so much fun skating today! Mr. Law even joined us. Remember there is no school on Friday.

Week of January 25

(Monday) Literacy Week is this week. Tomorrow is 'read my shirt' day.

(Tuesday) Wednesday is 'Zoom Through a Book' day. We are going to Zoom with Mr. Hummel's Grade 4 class. There is a permission form for skating coming home today (yippee). There is also an order form for Pink Shirts for Pink Shirt Day coming home.

(Wednesday) Students enjoyed listening to a story read by Mr. Hummel today via ZOOM. We also had a visit from Mr. Law who read the class a story. Remember tomorrow is 'Reading Rocks so Wear Some Funky Socks.'

(Thursday) Tomorrow is Pajama Day and Cozy Up and Read Day. Students can wear pajamas (Please no stuffies). We had Ms. Boyle in today as a guest reader. Report cards will be sent home tomorrow.

(Friday) Report cards, term overview, and a classroom newsletter are being sent home today. Please sign and return the report card envelope. Also, fill out and return Unplug and Play booklets for a chance to win a prize.

Week of January 18

(Monday) We are starting our week off with compliments and put ups!

(Tuesday) PAC fundraiser information was sent home. We are starting to think of Valentine's Day already. Order forms for candy grams were sent home.

(Wednesday) Compliment and kind word week continues, students are encouraged to remember to compliment themselves too.

(Thursday) Next week is Literacy Week and Unplug and Play Week. Information is being sent home today. Also, help your child to be a word detective and look for soft 'Gg' words (e, i, and y soften c and g).

(Friday) D.E.A.R (Drop Everything And Read) Monday. Students are invited to bring a book.

Week of January 11

(Tuesday) New Meals / Pizza forms were handed out today. There were a few pizza forms left on the floor, so if your child did not bring one home, write me a note in the agenda book.

(Wednesday) School of Choice Informational Night is tonight. Check out the link on the SD #73 Web-site. If you have a child coming into kindergarten next year, please notice that kindergarten registration is coming soon.

(Thursday) I encourage students to pick their favourite book and read it at home tonight.

(Friday) What a gorgeous day. I hope everybody is able to enjoy some sunshine this afternoon. Next week, we are starting a kind words (compliments) week. I hope to hear many put ups, and no put downs.

Week of January 4

(Monday) I hope you all had a restful break! Happy New Year! New Health Check forms are being sent home today. Please read, fill out, sign, and return. January school newsletter is ready and posted on-line.

(Tuesday) We are getting back into the routine of being in school. We did some great math problem solving today (CGI). Students are coming up with great strategies for solving math problems. Remember to read, fill out, sign, and return new Health Check Forms. If you are a fan of hockey, enjoy cheering on Team Canada tonight at the World Junior Hockey Championships.

(Wednesday) What a gorgeous day outside today! Try to get out and get some more fresh air this evening.

(Thursday) Keep practising those Weekly Words. Remember knowing these words automatically will help build fluency and make you a more successful reader.

(Friday) Play some board games or card games this weekend. Board games and card games are an excellent way to build number sense and math skills.

Week of December 14

(Monday) Our reading strategy this week is to 'Practise common sight words and high frequency words.' These words are also called 'No Excuse' words. Practising these words will help improve your child's fluency when reading. There is a page near the back of the agenda book of 'sight words' if you want to practise some of these words over the holidays.

(Tuesday) We are starting to wind down before winter break. Friday is Pajama Day. Friday is also the last day of school before winter break.

(Wednesday) The link for the Christmas Concert should be ready tomorrow. Purdy's Chocolate Bars should also be coming home.

(Thursday) Some information about how to support reading at home over the holidays was sent home. Also, a list of Grade 2 'No Excuse Words' was sent home. If you are looking for ways to support learning at home over the holidays, have a look at this information. Purdy's Chocolate Bars were sent home today for those of you who ordered. Tomorrow is Pajama Day.

Week of December 7

(Monday) No school for students. Remember Tuesday is library day.

(Tuesday) I ended up having to be in a workshop today via ZOOM. I was at school, but not in the classroom much today. It sounds like students had a good day! Information about the PAC raffle baskets was sent home. They look amazing!

(Wednesday) We are 'gearing' up for Crazy / Silly / Unique / Unusual / Christmas (whatever you want to call it) Sweater Day on Friday, December 11. Show your school spirit and have some fun!

(Friday) A December 'Point of Progress' report went home with students today. Check the front pocket of the agenda books. More formal report cards will come home in January. Week of November 30

(Monday) Wow, it's the last day of November already! Wow! Remember, if you are able, please support Ms. Weber's and Ms. Chernoff's PET PAC Baskets. Ms. Chernoff is collecting for cats. Ms. Weber is collecting for dogs. Students can pick which basket they want to donate too. Of course, we will accept donations for any type of pet. We may try and go for a walk on Tuesday. We will not venture too far from the school. The purpose is to gather some items from nature for a bulletin board we are working on with our school's Aboriginal Education Worker.

(Tuesday) We did get out for a walk this morning. It was a gorgeous, and spectacular morning. The students enjoyed it so much, that we will try and do another walk on Thursday. This time Ms. Weber's class will join us. A note from Mrs. Phillips about the Christmas concert was sent home today. The December school newsletter is also now ready.

(Wednesday) With the weather as gorgeous as it is, we are planning to take another walk tomorrow afternoon and do some exploring along the river bank. There is no permission form necessary because I do have signed walking permission forms for all students. Remember, if you are able, please donate to our PET raffle baskets (cats or dogs).

(Thursday) We had so much fun on our river walk. Gulp, a few had too much fun trying to crack ice, and ended up a bit wet. Remember, class pajama day Friday! It will be a cozy day. New Meals and Pizza forms were sent home.

(Friday) No school for students on Monday.

Week of November 23

(Monday) Students have begun using their Mathletics accounts at school. Remember when you are able, please send a headset in with your child. Please have these labelled in a plastic bag. Remember it is library day tomorrow.

(Tuesday) PAC will be doing their annual Christmas Raffle Baskets this year. Ms. Weber and I are going to do 'Pet' baskets. Ms. Chernoff will organize a cat basket and Ms. Weber will organize a dog basket. If you are able, please bring a small donation for either basket, and let's remember our furry family members this holiday season.

(Wednesday) We are having a school spirit day on Friday, November 27. It is crazy hair / crazy hat day! Let's have some fun! The reading strategy we are working on this week is rereading text to build and improve fluency. It's always good to reread a good book.

Week of November 16

(Monday) I hope you were able to get outside on the weekend and enjoy the 'spring-like' weather. I went for walks on both Saturday and Sunday, and it was great to be outside. Remember that it is library day tomorrow. We are working on 'soft c' words this week. When 'c' is followed by 'e', 'i', or 'y' it makes the 'ssssssssssss' sound (for example, city, celery, or cylinder).

(Tuesday) BEST clothing order forms are coming home today! Stock up on some new BEST clothing.

Week of November 9

(Monday) It felt so great to be back today. I was feeling unwell on Friday, so decided to stay home. I am now feeling 100% better. I had a great report from the Teacher Teaching on Call that was in my room. Way to go students! If you ordered photos, student photos were sent home today with students. Also, a few students have lunch program credits from last Spring. Notes were sent home with individual students today if they have a lunch program credit. We will be observing Remembrance Day tomorrow. All students will receive a poppy. Donations for these poppies are appreciated.

(Tuesday) Students were very respectful today during Remembrance Day discussions and activities. Remember there is no school tomorrow. New Meals' Forms and Pizza Forms were sent home today.

(Wednesday) Remembrance Day! Lest We Forget!

(Thursday) Students have been working hard on the reading strategy, Visualizing / Making a picture or mental image. This strategy helps us to connect, comprehend, and remember text.

Week of November 2

(Monday) It was so exciting to hear students' stories about their Halloween.

(Tuesday) PAC Cookie dough order forms were sent home today. Looks like there are some new flavours. If you have not already done so, please send a headset in for your child. Place these headsets in a Ziploc Bag with your child's name on it. Also remember to send in a pair of inside shoes. We visit the gym at least four times a week, so it is helpful to have proper, clean footwear in the gym. If you are looking for a home / school connection activity. Please look for patterns around the house or in the environment.

(Wednesday) Students showed a great deal of growth mindset today. Way to go students! Keep working hard. If you are looking for an activity to do at home tonight, I have asked students to be word detectives and look for words that have an 'ing' in them.

(Thursday and Friday) I was absent Thursday afternoon for a workshop, and was feeling unwell on Friday, so I decided to stay home. Have a wonderful weekend!

Week of October 26

(Monday) We got through the first day of navigating winter clothing. Students really enjoyed playing in the snow though. We participated in school-wide D.E.A.R. today (Drop Everything And Read). Remember tomorrow is library day.

(Tuesday) If possible, can you send in a set of headphones, with your child, for them to use at school. Please send these in a Ziploc bag with student names on.

(Wednesday) We have had pumpkins donated to our class. We are going to do some observations and explorations with them, and then they will be coming home on Friday for you to carve . . . just in time for Halloween!

(Thursday) Halloween is just about here! Yes, students can wear costumes tomorrow. Students are not permitted to wear masks while at school, and if any sort of weapon prop is part of the costume, that needs to stay home. We are not permitted to hand out home baked treats this year, so please keep treats at home and enjoy them with your families. Thank you for your understanding!

(Friday) It was so great to see students in their Halloween costumes. Have a great weekend!

Week of October 19

(Monday) A friendly reminder from Mr. Law today on the announcements . . . please label student water bottles. There is quite a collection of water bottles in the lost and found.

(Tuesday) Early closure on Wednesday, October 20 for 'Point of Progress Reporting.' Remember, I am happy to communicate with parents whenever is necessary. Let me know when you would like a meeting, email, or phone call.

(Wednesday) New masks were sent home today. Remember, the gray masks from the School District have been recalled.

(Thursday) Remember there is no school on Friday. Friday is a Professional Development Day for teachers.

(Friday) No school for students. Professional Development Day. D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything and Read) on Monday. Students can bring in a favourite book to read.

Week of October 13

(Monday) Happy Thanksgiving! No school!

(Tuesday) It was great to connect with students again today. Thank you for your feedback about preferred methods of contact for reporting new week. I will be in touch with regarding an email, Zoom, or phone call. Those parents that are requesting an email, I will send those out next week. Photo retake day is this week on Thursday (October 15). This will also be class picture day too.

(Wednesday) Remember tomorrow is photo retake day. It is also class photo day. We also hope to go down to the River Bank tomorrow afternoon for about an 'hour.' The river is high, but we will be careful and make some observations and explorations from a distance.

(Thursday) Photo re-takes took place today, as well as class photos. We had a great walk to the river, and we created redds right on the river bank. It was a bit muddy, but we learned a lot and made many observations. A huge thank you to Mrs. Nicklas for joining us. Students were asked to draw a picture of something they observed at the river.

(Friday) I cannot believe another week has come to an end. Students did an excellent job with their Weekly Work Lists this week. We also wrapped up our unit on 2-D shapes today. We will review shapes again, but for the time being we are moving on in math. Have a great weekend! A note was sent home regarding a door change for Monday. Check the agenda books. Also, remember there is an early dismissal day on Wednesday next week. There is no school on Friday due to a professional development day.

(Monday) Remember tomorrow, Tuesday, October 6, is Individual Photo Day.

(Tuesday) Tuesdays are going to be our Library Day. Please send students' library books on Tuesdays. We have been learning about vowels and consonants. Review vowels and consonants with your child at home.

(Wednesday) We have been having fun reviewing the alphabet, and learning about consonants and vowels.

(Thursday) Students are doing an excellent job of identifying 2-D shapes in the environment.

(Tuesday) I hope everybody had a great long weekend. The staff at Bert Edwards had a great day of learning yesterday. Remember tomorrow is Orange Shirt Day! Wear an orange shirt if you are able.

(Wednesday) It was really great too see all of the orange shirts today. Every Child Matters! Every child is this class matters to me! You are all amazing in my eyes!

(Thursday) We are having some fun with Tangrams in preparation to do some work with 2-D shapes. There is a school newsletter posted on-line. Let me know if you would like me to send home a hard copy of the newsletter. We do have hard copies around the school.

Week of September 21

(Monday) The week is off to a great start! Remember Terry Fox Donations and Raise a Reader Donations are being collected this week. Friendly reminder that my email is kchernoff@sd73.bc.ca if you need to contact me. If you are unable to email, notes in the agenda book work too.

(Tuesday) Another exciting day! Please note some new health check information came home in the agenda books today. Read that over. Just a note about scheduling. Mrs. Phillips does Fine Arts with students on Tuesdays and Thursdays (this is my PREP time). Mrs. Phillips is a Fine Arts Specialist. Ms. Kipp works with students on Tuesdays and Thursdays as well (while Ms. Kipp is in the classroom, I am doing PREP in the District Resource Room). Ms. Kipp will be doing library skills and technology skills with the students (she is truly an expert in both of these areas). Students will go with Ms. Kipp to the library on Tuesdays.

(Wednesday) Wow, the week is going by quickly. We began our 'Read to Self' routine today. Students got their book bins and have begun collecting books for 'Read to Self' time. Happy Reading! Soon, I will send out some suggestions for reading at home. Remember Terry Fox activities will happen on Friday.

(Thursday) Terry Fox Activities are happening tomorrow. Wear a Terry Fox shirt, or show your school spirit by wearing your B.E.S.T. swag.

(Friday) Terry Fox Activities were so much fun today! It was so exciting to see the school out moving their bodies and bringing awareness to Terry Fox's legacy. Remember there is no school for students on Monday, September 28. This is the first Professional Development Day. Enjoy a well-deserved long weekend!

Week of September 14

(Monday) Here we go! The first full week of school has begun. I am already so proud of all of the students in the class. Everybody is adjusting well to their new classroom, as well as some of the new expectations at school. On Monday, students should have brought home their new agenda book. Parents please look at these each night and sign them so I know that I you have seen them. These agenda books will be our back and forth communication books as well. There is great information in these agenda books, so take some time to look at them and read them.

(Tuesday) P.A.C. fundraising information coming home today. Check the front pocket of your child's agenda book.

(Wednesday) Terry Fox information was sent home today. Our Terry Fox activities will be different this year, but still active and fun. We will be collecting donations next week. We will celebrate and honour Terry Fox on the afternoon of Friday, September 25.

(Thursday) Scholastic Book Order was sent home. This year, all book orders are done on-line from home. They are delivered to your home too. Money or orders do not come to me. Our class code is: RC184301

(Friday) Check the front pocket of agenda books this weekend. There is a classroom note in there, as well as some P.A.C. fundraising information. Try to get out in nature this weekend and look for examples of symmetry in nature.
