Cooking and baking can be a great way to include your child in daily household chores. It is awesome for math skills, cooperation, patience, problem solving, fine motor skills, and experimentation. I have included a few recipes below that are my favourite and that I used to make with my own kiddos. I have also included a couple of links below to some websites with some very kid friendly recipes. Enjoy!
1 (15-ounce) can tomato sauce
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
1/3 cup honey
1/4 cup tomato paste
1/4 cup molasses
3 tablespoons Worcestershire
2 teaspoons liquid smoke
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon freshly-ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt
optional: a few pinches of cayenne for extra heat, if desired
Combine ingredients. Whisk all ingredients together in a medium saucepan.
Simmer. Cook over medium-high heat until the sauce reaches a simmer. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer (uncovered) for 10-15 minutes, or until the sauce has slightly thickened.
Serve. Use the sauce immediately, or refrigerate in a sealed container for up to 1 week.
1⅓ cups all-purpose flour
3 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon kosher salt
2 large eggs
1¼ cups buttermilk
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
Vegetable oil (for griddle)
Pure maple syrup (for serving)
Whisk flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl. Whisk eggs, buttermilk, and butter in a medium bowl; stir into dry ingredients until just combined (some lumps are okay).
Heat a griddle or large skillet over medium; brush with oil. Working in batches, scoop ⅓-cupfuls of batter onto griddle. Cook pancakes until bottoms are golden brown and bubbles form on top, about 3 minutes. Flip and cook until cooked through and other side of pancakes are golden brown, about 2 minutes longer. Serve pancakes with maple syrup.
