Students in the Kamloops-Thompson School District can take the
first four levels of the DELF, Levels A1-B2.
The Diplôme d’études en langue française (DELF or Diploma of French Language Studies) is an internationally recognized French Language Proficiency Certificate awarded by France’s national Ministry of Education.
It consists of a series of independent assessments based on a scale of language proficiency defined in the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), a framework used in second language learning around the world.
DELF evaluators are teachers trained and accredited by France’s Centre international d’études pédagogiques.
DELF assessments exist in different versions adapted for children, teenagers and adults. All versions respect the same format and standards but content and themes vary.
In SD73, we offer the DELF Scolaire at four of the six CEFR levels of language proficiency.
Fees:
To help cover some of the costs associated with offering the DELF in Kamloops, the following fees apply:
Levels A1 & A2: $ 65
Levels B1 & B2: $ 70
Please contact your school's administration if you require financial support.
Limitations:
Students can complete the DELF only once every 12 months.
Only students currently enrolled in School District #73, Kamloops-Thompson, are able to register for these exams. Other interested parties are encouraged to contact one of the DELF testing centres in Vancouver, BC.
Students must be between 12 and 18 years old.
The registration fee cannot be reimbursed if a student does not show up.
Students with an IEP:
If a student would like to do the DELF who has an IEP (Individual Education Plan), they can get accommodations congruent with their IEP. Please let the Language Coordinator know as soon as possible as it can take months to get the appropriate approvals in place.
Talk to your French teacher.
They will likely be able to determine what level DELF exam is most appropriate for you.
The DELF tests four French language skills:
. Listening comprehension
. Understanding written text
Expressing yourself in writing
Having a conversation with another person
In addition to practicing your French in class,
you can prepare yourself for the DELF in your spare time using some of the resources listed under the respective tabs above.
Talk to your French teacher for more ideas on how you improve your French outside of school.
When will I get my DELF Certificate?
Your first DELF certificate, called l'attestation, will become available within about 3 months of completing the DELF exam. It will tell you if you passed the DELF and what your percentages are for each of the four skills that were tested. This attestation will be distributed to you by a French teacher at your school. The attestation is printed on regular paper and serves as a place holder until...
Ten to 12 months after completing the DELF, you will receive your official DELF certificate by mail (Canada Post) that is ready to be framed.
Who are the DELF Examiners?
Our DELF examiners are dedicated and highly trained French teachers from School District No. 73. DELF examiners undergo rigorous training and testing every five years. In addition, all DELF examiners get a refresher training before each DELF session. We try to avoid matching up students with their current French teachers to avoid a potential conflict of interest. Every oral and written exam is reviewed by two DELF examiners so as to assure a balanced and objective assessment.
What does it take to pass the DELF?
You need a minimum overall score of 50 out of 100 to pass, and you also need a minimum of 5 out of 25 points in each individual skill (speaking, listening, reading, writing).
What if I fail the exam?
Nothing. Your DELF results are confidential. The French teacher at your school will not know what your score is. The only person who will be informed of your result is you and your School Counselor as they get a copy of the attestation. Should you not pass the DELF, you will be personally, discretely informed of the situation.
How many times can I take the same DELF exam?
As many times as you like. However, when you turn 18 or graduate from secondary school, you no longer qualify for the DELF Scolarie. At that point, you will have to complete the adult version of the exam (DELF Tout Public) which is not offered in Kamloops.
How many students complete the DELF in SD73 each year?
We run a DELF session in November and April of each school year. Between 110 and 140 students sign up each year.
Do I have to write the DELF exam in Kamloops?
No. The DELF is offered in over 165 countries. You can write the DELF in any of the 965 DELF centres around the world. School District No. 73 offers the DELF in Kamloops to spare students the expense of traveling to Vancouver to complete the exam.
