The Student Action Committee

Launched in 2019, the Georgetown Day School Student Action Committee (SAC) is a one-stop shop hub of activism that works on issues our students are passionate about. As youth in Washington, DC, GDS students have a responsibility to represent our generation and our beliefs by using the power of our position to influence our communities. A branch of the GDS Community Engagement and Experiential Learning (CEEL) Department, SAC has a direct circuit to communication with other schools in the broader DC area, so as to impact large-scale change!

The 2021-2022 School Year

Throughout the fall of 2021 and spring of 2022, SAC focused primarily on three different core projects, along with smaller community-based initiatives that meet regularly throughout the year. The Voter Mobilization Initiative focused their efforts during this non-election-cycle-year on achieving DC Statehood, ranked-choice voting, and enhancing civic education campaigns in the DMV area. The Environmental Task Force worked on qualifying GDS and schools in the area for Green School Certification by focusing primarily on minimizing waste and promoting green wellness. The Art Initiative worked to raise awareness for a slew of social justice issues using art activism, from community murals to virtual painting sessions, and held sessions at the Summit on Sexual Assault and Consent.

We also organized the first ever Eco Market Day! The event, geared toward people of all ages to promote healthy living, took place at GDS on Saturday April 23rd, which coincided with Earth Weekend, Sports Saturday, and Alumni Weekend. Student-run stalls led composting tutorials, held a clothing swap, registered voters, and more.
