A note before you begin....
It is extremely helpful for students who are exiting each of the grades listed below to practice their math facts over the summer. But, "practice" means something different than it did many years ago. Gone are the days when flashcards and timed tests were the way to "learn" facts.
Learning facts by accessing strategies while playing games and doing puzzles has proven to be far more effective in helping students to know their facts "from memory" rather than memorization. Check out this article by Dr. Jo Boaler, Stanford Professor of Mathematics Education titled, Fluency without Fear*, for information about how to approach math fact practice and watch this video from Graham Fletcher, a leading mathematics educator about what "knowing facts from memory" vs memorization means.
*This article includes an excellent set of visual flash "cards" to assist children in "seeing" what facts represent with a model.
