GDOE Off-Island Travel Report

ISTE 2019 @Philadelphia

Femelyne C. Wesolowski, DLPES School Librarian

1. Describe your participation in the conference. What activities did you participate in or attend?

Please view the ISTE 2019 Session Schedule for Femy Wesolowski

Goal: attend [1] sessions that showcase elementary classroom teachers using tech tools and sites as part of their content delivery; [2] sessions that describe accessibility features of tech tools and sites to help learners who are blind, hard of hearing, deaf; [3] sessions that promote how to teach computer science, digital citizenship, coding.

2. Do you expect that the skills and knowledge gained at the conference will enhance your job performance? In what ways?

Information and Literature are now available in print and digital formats. The ISTE 2019 Conference presenters provided inspiration and ideas on how [1] students can learn using tools and sites, [2] teachers can integrate such tools and sites.

The sessions I attended did provide how tech tools and sites are part of content delivery in the classroom. The session descriptions and resources provided a goldmine of how to address the ISTE standards and what can be used by elementary school teachers.

These sessions showed how as 21st Century School Librarian, I need to develop my repertoire to include [1] learning about computational thinking alongside learning about & teaching coding, [2] planning how and who to work with in making computer science accessible to learners who are blind, deaf, or hard of hearing, and [3] working with colleagues to develop our "tech-capabilities." This website "Tech On!" will curate session resources for educators to use.

My caution is that the current resources of tools and sites may no longer be useful within two-three years. I will monitor the resources annually or sooner.

3. How will the skills and knowledge you gained from the conference be translated into practice in the classroom, school, or district level?

Classroom / Library & School

I will [1] continue exploring the resources available directly from the session presenters or from the digital tote on my account on the ISTE 2019 site, [2] which one can be shared at the school site and or with fellow librarians, and [3] which can be integrated into library lessons. This website will be shared at the DLPES Faculty Orientation August 9, 2019.

School & District

I will obtain more information about the ISTE U Computational Thinking course and work with the elementary school group created during the December 2018 Connected Educators: Standards Re-fresh. The sessions about digital citizenship will provide ideas for lesson planning.

My caution is that the current resources of tools and sites may no longer be useful within two-three years. I will monitor the resources annually or sooner.

4. How will the skills and knowledge you gained from the conference be shared with other educators?

Website: Tech On!

I will continue to upload the resources available directly from the session presenters or from the digital tote on my account on the ISTE 2019 site through this Google Site. I will share this website with colleagues at Daniel L. Perez Elementary School and the GDOE School Librarians.

Please note that resources will continue to be uploaded after the of submission of this report. Also, as I upload the resources from the sessions I attended, I also upload resources from my second-choice sessions or sessions with similar topics.

My caution is that the current resources of tools and sites may no longer be useful within two-three years. I will monitor the resources annually or sooner.

Library Instruction @DLPES, @School Librarian Professional Development Days, and @PEC2020

I will log the resources that I will use during library instruction and the response from teachers and students, then compile findings into presentations for school librarians during 2019-2020 professional development days and for educators during the PEC2020 in June.

5. Please identify the funding source/project for this travel.

I'm sure you are all having challenges with upgrading membership to premium or even registering for Saturday session. Ms. Shannon from FPO is working with ISTE on trying to fix this; so as soon as we hear word from them I'll let you know next steps.

Ms. Femy, you don't have to change anything-- you are fine with all your arrangements. Thanks!

Hi All,

We have just been informed by the Federal Program Office to inform all travelers to take advantage of the ISTE Pre-Conference on Saturday, June 22. Please go in to your accounts and change your registration to Premium and register for Saturday sessions. Send me your final registration to include the session you signed up for.

Additionally, contact Pactours and revise your itinerary to depart Guam on June 21 instead of June 22 and depart Philadelphia on June 27 back to Guam. If you plan on deviating after, there will be a time for you to make that change. For now, just have your itineraries June 21-June 27.

Please send me your revised registrations with Saturday session and itineraries by COB tomorrow, 05/16 so that we can redo all packets and have you all come in to sign on Friday.

Sincere apologies for the inconvenience.

Thank you!
