First Grade

Dear Students and Families,

Welcome to First Grade! We are excited about the opportunity to get to know you, and we are looking forward to a happy and productive school year.

Studies show that parental involvement in a child’s education is one of the strongest indicators of student achievement. We hope you will make it a priority this year to attend as many school-sponsored events as possible.

If you have any questions or concerns or if you would like to visit your child’s classroom, schedule a conference, or volunteer to help out, feel free to contact your child’s homeroom teacher by calling 477-9370 or by emailing the teacher’s address below. The best times to reach us are at 10:00AM-10:15AM (Recess), 11:30AM-12:15PM (Lunch), or 12:15PM-12:55PM (Teacher Prep- Monday, Wednesday, Friday)

All information regarding curriculum, homework, awards, and other policies are provided in the syllabus and Student Handbook.

Once again, welcome to First Grade! Let’s work together to make this the best year ever!

Sincerely,

Schoolwide Classroom Management Plan

The students begin the day with Green (Good).  Each time the child breaks a rule or is reminded 3 or more times, his/her color will be changed according to the Behavior Card. Green to Yellow (Warning), Yellow to Red (Lose 10 minutes of Recess). When Red is reached, parents will be contacted. Recurring instances will result in a Parent Conference. Parents will either be called or contacted via the Homework Folder/Planner. For major infractions such as causing injury to others, the student will automatically be sent to the principal’s office for disciplinary action and parents will be contacted.

Parent/Teacher Communication

Open communication with parents is very important throughout the school year. Parents will receive the following as the school year progresses:

Should you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact your child’s teacher.

Health Information Card

Each student should have a Student Health and Emergency Information Card completes by the parent/guardian. Please inform the school whenever the information on this card changes--Especially telephone numbers!

THE SCHOOL WILL NOT RELEASE STUDENTS TO ANYONE NOT LISTED ON THE EMERGENCY CARD, AND WHO IS UNABLE TO FURNISH A PHOTO IDENTIFICATION. IF CHANGES ARE MADE FOR ANY REASON, PLEASE INFORM YOUR CHILD(s) TEACHER AND IT MUST BE APPROVED BY OUR SCHOOL PRINCIPAL.

Healthy Habits

While the school nurse is responsible for your child's health needs while he/she is at school, the parent/guardian bears the major responsibility for his/her health. Your child can learn better when he/she practices the following healthy habits at home:

** Breakfast is the most important meal of the day as your child has not had any food to eat since dinner to the time your child wakes. So it is important that your child eats a healthy breakfast daily.

** Getting an adequate amount of sleep allows your child to rest and heal. Eight to ten hours of sleep every night is recommended.

** Eating too much sugar from candy, soda, and other sweets causes cavities when left untreated, or when not prevented, leads to toothache. A child experiencing a bad toothache is distracted and unable to concentrate on school work and affects attendance. Encourage your child to brush his/her teeth twice daily, and to avoid eating excess sugar.

** Ensuring that your child bathes or showers daily, his/her hair is clean, his/her teeth is brushed and wears clean clothes also affects how our child(ren) performs in school.

PLEASE KEEP AN EXTRA SET OF CLEAN CLOTHES (a blouse/shirt, skit/pants, raincoats and undergarments) IN YOUR CHILD'S BAG AT ALL TIMES. THIS IS HELPFUL IN THE EVENT YOUR CHILD HAS A CLOTHING ACCIDENT. CHECK YOUR CHILD'S BAG PERIODICALLY AND REPLACE SOILED/TORN GARMENTS WITH A NEW SET OF CLEAN GARMENTS AS NEEDED.
