Self Care Series

WestCare Pacific Islands Ma’lak Na ‘Ha’åni “Bright Futures” is a program in partnership with your child’s school, F.B. Leon Guerrero middle school. The program’s mission is to help educate and work with youth to overcome the impacts of trauma and to foster resiliency. Program services include individual/group counseling, skill building groups, school coordination, crisis intervention, and outreach services.

The program is happy to announce that we will be hosting a free virtual workshop called the “Self-Care Series” on October 20th, October 21st, October 27th, and October 28th, where students will have the opportunity to learn and build skills in areas of self-care, helpful thinking, healthy expression of emotions, and stress management during this 4-session workshop. Sessions will be facilitated by Bright Futures staff during the following dates listed.

Dates of sessions:

Wednesdays/Thursdays

October 20 October 21 October 27 October 28 4:30 PM – 5:15 PM (45 minutes)

If your child is interested in this great opportunity to learn and build skills, please complete the following information below and the attached Referral Form from WestCare Pacific Islands to register. Once consent is received, the staff from Bright Futures will contact parent/guardian & child to complete self-report questionnaires. Growing Gratitude

Learning how to be grateful is just like learning a new sport or instrument or dance. It takes PRACTICE. Gratitude is also like a muscle - we have to keep exercising it so it will grow in strength and that way when we need it most, we will be able to use it.

You might not think you have a lot to be grateful for which is why we need to train our eyes and our minds to see differently. Try completing this list of Gratitude Prompts every day, or as many days as you can.

I am proud of you. I hope you are proud of yourself too.

I keep thinking that with all this time I SHOULD be doing more...

I SHOULD be becoming a breakout Instagram or TikToc star...

I SHOULD be starting that blog I've been thinking about writing forever (wait is this that?)...

I SHOULD be doing more with my daughter and reading more and learning more...

I SHOULD be becoming a world class baker and a yoga master...

But this pressure I am putting on myself to do MORE (and BE MORE) during the quarantine is bringing me down - I am hurting myself with these expectations and thoughts.

I need to remember that we are in the middle of a global health crisis. And like any other crises, this can effect my brain, my heart, and my body. I can tell this is happening inside me because it's so much harder to do the things I once did daily. Some days I can't seem to do anything at all.

So if you are having a hard time too, be KIND to yourself. You deserve your kindness and love and care.

One of the ways we can be kind to ourselves is to create realistic goals. Think of one thing you want to do today and do that. You can follow the ACTION CALENDAR below or use it for ideas of your own. This month is MEANINGFUL MAY. Doing things that are meaningful helps me feel good about myself especially when I'm feeling anxious.

Remember just one thing a day and take it one day at a time.

I believe you can do hard things. I will be with you here.

Please take good care of yourself. You matter so much.

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, "Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” -Fred Rogers

I have been feeling a lot like Mr. Rogers did when he was a kid - scared by the things on the news and scared by the things that are happening around me. But I have also been doing what Mr. Rogers invites us to do in his quote above - I have been making decisions about what I focus on.

I have been CHOOSING on PURPOSE to pay ATTENTION to the GOOD and the HOPEFUL that is also happening.
I have been CHOOSING on PURPOSE to pay ATTENTION to the things I CAN CONTROL.

It hasn't always been easy for me to tell the difference between what I CAN control versus what I CANNOT control. Some people call this practice MINDFULNESS and it took me a lot of practice just to get a start. It helped to have examples and role models who had been doing this longer than me.

If you are feeling overwhelmed or sad or scared, take a look at the diagram above. Are the things you worry about outside of the yellow moon? If they are, try and turn your attention to what is inside the moon and let the other stuff go. Perhaps you can say to yourself, "Self, you don't have control over that and that's okay. Please let it go. There is stuff you can control, let's go there."

It is heartbreaking that so many people are sick and dying. I am so worried about people losing their jobs and not having enough food and money to take care of themselves and their families. This practice is not about denying that these things are happening. It is about acknowledging what is happening and doing what we can in that frame. Maybe we can donate some food and money or maybe you can make a TikToc that spreads joy and laughter. Maybe you can spend time with your parents and siblings and let them know how important they are to you. Watch Riya Sokol's video below for more inspiration.

What I am writing here is not easy. It takes a lot of practice (and kindness) to train our minds to pay attention. But what I am offering is something AMAZING. You have the POWER to CHANGE your life by what you CHOOSE to pay ATTENTION to.

I am so grateful to know each and every one of you. I am sad that we are apart but we will find new and different ways to stay connected.

I believe you can do hard things. I will be with you here.

Thank You, Coronavirus (Riya Sokol)

Thank you for SHAKING us and showing us, we are dependent on something much bigger than we think. ⁣

Thank you for making us APPRECIATE the luxury we lived in- abundance of products, FREEDOM, HEALTH and realising we were taking it for granted. ⁣

Thank you for STOPPING us to make us SEE how lost we were in the "busy-ness"; not having time for most basic things.

Thank you for allowing us to put aside all the“problems”we thought were so important, and showing us what is ACTUALLY important.⁣

Thank you for stopping the transport. The earth was begging us to look at the pollution for a very long time… we didn’t listen.⁣

Thank you for all the FEAR- that's been a global disease for YEARS but not many of us wanted to face it. NOW we HAVE TO face it and learn how to embrace it with love and with SUPPORT of our COMMUNITY. Thank you for this REVALUATION of our lives.⁣

Thank you as we finally understand what it means, that WE ARE ALL CONNECTED.⁣

Thank you for the unity between all of us.⁣

We knew the world has to change. Thank you for helping us to undermine everything and giving us a chance to build the world from the beginning. ⁣

THIS VIRUS IS PART OF US. IT’s BETWEEN US, IN US. IT CONNECTED US ALL. EITHER PHYSICALLY OR ENERGETICALLY.
