Rugiens (Latin for "Roaring") is the name of the jet engine that is designed to implement new materials into jet engines that allow for an easier and more sustainable building process and make the engine more eco-friendly by utilizing more eco-friendly materials that can be reused.
The materials used to build such engines are mainly 3D printing materials which allow for an easier modeling and building process.
One of the main benefits of 3D printing is the Cost of the process when compared to CNC machines (machines used to cut out shapes from solid metal). 3D printing is an easier access process that allows for multiple parts to be built compared to the single-part production of most metal-cutting machines. In addition to this, 3D printers and 3D printable materials are far cheaper than the average CNC machine and the metals that are shaped.
The average CNC machine costs around 1000 to 3000 dollars with some even going up to 17,900 dollars whilst the average 3D printer will cost you around 200 to 500 dollars and only a few will reach 1,400 and above.
In addition to the cheaper costs of machinery as a benefit for 3D printing, materials used for 3D printing are far easier to use and are far higher recyclability than metals used for CNC machines.
An additional reason why 3D printing was the preferred process for the project was because of the potential of such a process. One of the main goals for this project was to implement 3D printing into building a jet engine, however, there was a second partial reason which was to show the potential that 3D printing has on development in the world.
