What my project turned into is very different than how I initially planned. In the beginning, I brainstormed a few ways I would approach my central question of why I did not actively volunteer, and why others don't as well. I thought that maybe it was because people were doing it alone and it would be more enjoyable in groups. I then shifted to the idea that maybe some organizations did not have proper outreach to students. While both of these ideas are true, proving and acting on either one was not the direction I went in.
To help further visualize my project I interviewed a few of my peers. The information I gathered from all of these interviews is that a key reason people do not volunteer is that they don't know where to go or how to get started. I also found myself facing this same issue. This was when I decided that I wanted to provide the Grace community with something I wish I had when trying to find volunteer opportunities; a resource of many different volunteer opportunities made specifically for students. Seeing as this was a common reason that people did not volunteer, making a resource document would be very beneficial to my peers.
In addition to the interviews I spent a lot of time online looking up different organizations and going through different volunteering websites such as New York Cares. The issue I found with this website was while it made signing up very simple, in order to make an account you have to verify that you are over the age of 18. This website also does not have a variety of options for high school students with busy schedules. In addition to the research, an important part of this process was sending lots of emails to (and calling) several organizations. This is because most websites are unclear as to their age requirements, or how to sign up. This process helped me make my resource as accurate and informational as possible and ensured that the organizations I included would take student volunteers and respond when reached out to.
