Susan Jacobs received an undergraduate degree in Nursing from the University of Colorado and specialized in OB/GYN Nursing. She served as a Visiting Nurse in New York City and an RN at North Shore Hospital in Manhasset, NY. Towards the end of her career, Susan worked at New York University as a Health Sciences Librarian.
During our conversation, Susan spoke about how she grew up in a medical environment because of her father, who was a doctor. She spoke about the culture surrounding "female careers" and how many of the girls she knew only gravitated towards female-dominated fields because it was they were the only jobs they saw women pursuing. She also mentioned the clear hierarchy between nurses and doctors, and that because they already had strong gender biases, it made it difficult to address because they were baked into the culture of the hospital.
