Kathleen Mills is currently pursuing a PhD in Immunology and Microbial Pathogenesis at Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences. She is currently working as a graduate research assistant at Memorial Sloan Kettering Center in the lab of Dr. Tobias Hohl. Her research focuses on fungal respiratory pathogens.
During our conversation, Kathleen spoke about how 9th-grade biology sparked her interest in the human cell and the cause of disease. She shared about her current research, saying that the labs she has worked in have been very collaborative. When speaking about current gender discrepancies in medicine, Kathleen emphasized the importance of mentorship, and the value of having mentors you can relate to and identify with. She also spoke about prioritizing support for doctors with children and accommodating women with familial commitments so they can continue their careers while also having a family. Overall, Kathleen approached to topic of research from a human perspective, saying that if we prioritize the well-being of our researchers, it will have a positive effect on the accuracy of the statistics we use.Â
