Dr. Adriana Malone is the Program Director of Hematology-Oncology and BMT Fellowships at Mount Sinai Hospital and is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
During our interview, Dr. Malone spoke about her experience in medical school, and how even though her class in medical school was equal in terms of gender balance, the number of women continues to decline as the levels of education increase, which can often lead to a lack of women in hospital leadership roles. Dr. Malone also talked about how because of the amount of time medical school requires, many women struggle with finding the right time in their career to start a family, as it can often lead to women getting left behind if they do not have the support needed to raise children. Dr. Malone ended our conversation with talking about the importance of mentorship, and how her role as head of the BMT fellowship program has allowed her to conquer the issue of gender bias in her field.
