When students engage in rigorous learning experiences that require the deep, complex thinking required to innovate, think critically, be creative, and make relevant connections, learning is richer and more meaningful. When students are actively engaged in learning at this level, they reach a level of mastery that allows them to understand concepts fully, retain information, and apply learning to new and novel situations.

In Granville County Public Schools, rigor is defined through our 5 Tenets of Rigor. Each tenet is described below. Teachers can use this checklist to evaluate lessons and determine if the tenets exist.
In Granville County Public Schools, rigor is defined through our 5 Tenets of Rigor. Each tenet is described below. Teachers can use this checklist to evaluate lessons and determine if the tenets exist.
Critical Thinking & Problem Solving: Is using higher-order thinking skills to develop deeper understanding, make meaningful connections, and create unique solutions to personalized and/or authentic, real-world problems.
Creative Thinking & Innovation: Is using discovery, curiosity, or independent/collaborative processes to transform or create a product or an idea in order to solve personal, authentic real-world problems or to satisfy a need or desire.
Collaboration & Engagement: Is leveraging teamwork to integrate multiple perspectives to expand and deepen thinking and using genuine exploration and inquiry to make learning meaningful and to accomplish a common goal.
Complexity, Connections, & Relevancy: Is thinking in complex ways, making connections between ideas, and transferring understandings across content areas and to new real-life experiences.
Communication & Reflection: Is a continuous cycle of revised thinking to deepen and expand understanding and the sharing of thinking in ways that others can understand and/or in ways that reinforce or clarify personal understanding.

Webb's Depth of Knowledge (DOK)
One common framework for analyzing the rigor of lessons and units is Webb's Depth of Knowledge. Using this framework, teachers can categorize tasks by the complexity of thinking needed to complete them. This helps teachers identify where tasks may be re-written to increase the level of rigor.
