Casey Gradick, MD, MPH, is an Associate Professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine at the University of Utah and an Adjunct Professor in the Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine. Originally from Minnesota, he left for warmer skies to attend UNC-Chapel Hill, where he majored in anthropology. His interest in epidemiology brought him back to Minnesota to pursue a Master of Public Health at the University of Minnesota, where he also completed medical school. In 2013, he was thrilled to match at the University of Utah in the combined Med-Peds residency program, serving as Chief Resident in his fourth year. He became Program Director of the Med-Peds residency in 2019 and now practices as a dual Med-Peds hospitalist, splitting his clinical time between Primary Children’s Hospital and the University of Utah Hospital.
He developed an interest in broad-spectrum rural Med-Peds practice during the COVID-19 pandemic while working at the Northern Navajo Medical Center in Shiprock, New Mexico. In 2020, he applied for a HRSA grant to develop a rural-focused track and curriculum within the Med-Peds residency program. He is proud that today, three-quarters of the residents are enrolled in the Rural Pathway.
His professional interests include partnership-building between academic medical centers and Tribal organizations, curriculum development, and resident wellness. He hopes the Rural Pathway will inspire residents to pursue careers dedicated to addressing health disparities in rural and Tribal communities.
