Ben Baker Research Scientist University of Utah Seismograph Stations
I am Ben Baker, research scientist at the University of Utah Seismograph Stations (UUSS). Since joining the UUSS in 2019, my research has focused on operationalizing machine learning models so as to improve our event detection and characterization capabilities. Additionally, I maintain and, when necessary, extend our current seismic processing software.
Prior to joining UUSS, I received my Ph.D. from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 2013. Following graduation, I joined a seismic software company, Instrumental Software Technologies, Inc. (ISTI). With ISTI, I helped build a tsunami warning system for the National and Pacific Tsunami Warning Centers and developed event screening tools for the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Organization.
While at ISTI, I also worked closely with the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network (PNSN) at the University of Washington. Over the course of my four years at the PNSN, I helped implement a GPS-based earthquake early warning module for the ShakeAlert project and taught an introductory seismology class.
