Husband, Parent, Professor and Researcher
Professor at _DEEC_ | _FEUP_ | _UP_
Researcher at _CRIIS_ | _INESC TEC_
Armando Jorge Miranda de Sousa received his PhD in 2004, in Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at University of Porto - Faculty of Engineering (FEUP). His thesis work was in the subarea of Robotics and Automation. He is currently an Auxiliary Professor in the ECE department of FEUP and an integrated researcher at the Centre for Intelligent and Industrial Systems (CRIIS) at the INESC TEC interface institute. He earned in 2014 the international pedagogical certification "ING.PAED.IGIP" from the International Society for Engineering Pedagogy. His main research areas include Automation, Robotics and Higher Education. As a frequent participant in robotic contests, he has earned several national and international merits -- examples: vice champion of RoboCup Robotic Soccer in 2006, two times "European" champion of RoboCup Robotic Soccer, winner of Autonomous Driving of Portuguese Robotics Open for several years. He has also earned educational awards such as the University of Porto (UP) excellence award in 2015 and 10 best at ECEL 2015 excellence e-learning awards. He has published over 80 indexed peer reviewed articles both in pedagogical issues and more technical areas. Furthermore, he also has an active patent entitled "Device and method for identifying a cork stopper and respective kit". He is also involved in educational and technical funded projects such as "IntelWheels 2" and "EIT CPPS 101". He is the local responsible for FEUP for the "Replant" mobilizer project.
I am passionate about Education, and it is also a target of my research, including games for learning.
Additionally, I have become interested in sustainability and ethics.
Regarding more technical areas, I do research in the fields of Automation and Robotics, including agricultural/forestry robotics.
I have recentred my research to intelligent systems and data fusion, mainly using AI and ML, resulting in Intelligent Robotics and Intelligent Automation.
Work areas arranged by topics:
Automation & Robotics
"Intelligent" Automation - data fusion, intelligent control, time series, ...
"Intelligent" Robotics and Robot Learning - reinforcement learning, ...
Vision as a sensor - Point Clouds, Stereo, RGBD, extended spectrum vision systems, object detection...
Real Time "edge devices" / IoT...
(Higher) Education
Ethics and sustainability for engineers
Massification and technologies at the service of education
Games for learning
